A man, who literally was hit by a bus and was told that he could never work again, had found his way to Dee. Both Dee and the client were amazed at the speed and completeness of this physical come-back that the medical community was incapable of facilitating. Surely, no medication would have substituted! Stress and psychosomatic contributions to illness are given rather short attention in the traditional medical model. Many physicians don't want to admit that 8...5% or more of all illness is psychosomatic, as I was taught in medical school; they tend to consider such patients "crocks." In the last few years, however, psychoneuroimmunology is increasingly demonstrating, from a very scientific point of view, that mood is perhaps the most critical factor in maintaining the integrity of the body, especially of the immune system. Depression essentially clobbers the ability of the immune system to be healthy.
