The new #ophthalmic surgeon has much to think about during their first few days or months. Skills develop gradually over time, and each OR day is an opportunity to learn and grow. Remember to be patient with yourself and recognize that no surgeon achieves excellence without running the gauntlet of complications, heavy days, and variations in surgical pathology. Check out more advice for avoiding common pitfalls in the early days of surgical practice, by David Felsted, DO: https://bit.ly/3qA7JrZ
One of the most pressing issues for the future of #eyecare is the impending shortage of #ophthalmologists. The estimated number of US residents aged 65 years and older continues to grow, with a projected increase of 105.2% from 2015 to 2060. With this increase in the aging population comes an increase in #eyedisease. To keep up with the growing demand, a successful MD-OD business model may become vital for the #ophthalmic practice. https://bit.ly/3qylR5k

This issue of MillennialEYE is dedicated to highlighting some common areas that challenge surgeons in their early days of practice (and sometimes beyond): surgical autonomy, personal and practice finances, patient satisfaction and reviews, and staffing considerations. https://bit.ly/3GwP2uP

An important concern is that many people with glaucoma may be legally eligible to drive based on their visual acuity, but a state’s #visualfield requirements may allow individuals to drive whose ocular conditions make their doing so unsafe. Many young doctors with little savings and often large student loan debt are unaware that they have already attained the most significant asset that most physicians will ever acquirethe value of their future income. Physicians must take steps early in their careers to protect this substantial asset. Given the considerable investment made to become a practicing physician, it should not be surprising that the value of a doctor’s future income is also significant.
