Why supporting local this holiday season will be more important than ever. 2020, I need a break. It's not you, it's me. I lied, its YOU.... We have experienced a year we will never forget. Many of us have endoured serious set backs that may take several years to recover from. Local businesses return 80% of each dollar to your community: which creates jobs, which creates our middle class. When you shop locally you are supporting members of your own community who are also vested in the health and success of the community. Let take ourselves back to the 90s where the mall at Steamtown was booming, cherry drug store was filled with penny candy, where kids road their bikes to grab lunch at the corner store and grocery stores were small, local and everywhere. Many of these small shops have gone by the wayside pushed out by chain stores and ecommerce offering cheaper prices and convenience. Additionally, zoning laws have made it hard for small businesses to comply and high rents are a barrier as well. Small mom & pops get pushed out by landlords in favor of big chains. Right before the pandemic an article was published from businessnewsdaily.com comparing large business and small business and the effects on the economy. According the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses generated 44% of the United States' economic activity from 1998 to 2014. While it is not quite half of the activity, think about how small these businesses are in comparison to the large Fortune 500 companies. As a small business owner I never would have guessed this number. In the same article it was stated that Walmart employees 1% of the US population, and still small business generate higher incomes for people in a community than big, non-local firms, which can actually depress local economies, said Stephan Goetz, Ph.D., professor of agricultural and regional economics at Penn State and director of the Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development. "We can't look outside of the community for our economic salvation." Goetz said from businessnewsdaily.com "The best strategy is to help people start new businesses and firms locally and help them grow and be successful." IN addition to the local effect on the economy shopping local also support the vitality of the world. You are also travelling less and requiring less things to be shipped meaning less carbon, pollution and traffic congestion. Bottom line: SHOP LOCAL! You can support small businesses and local artists at our upcoming @Sip & Shop & Black Friday Buy Local Event!! Check it out! We hope to see you there!
