Recently, our Project Restauración, Dominican Republic site donated a blood pressure cuff to the staff at Hospital Municipal De Restauración to be used in their maternity ward. Measuring a patient’s blood pressure is important for expectant moms and those going into labor. High blood pressure usually has no warning signs or symptoms, and many people do not know they have it. According to a study done by the NIH, during blood pressure (BP) measurement, the recommended positioning of the cuff bladder center is directly above the brachial artery.

Virtual Volunteer Spotlight! Today, we’re highlighting Drexel University College of Medicine graduate and future doctor, Danielle Uibel. Danielle participated in our Virtual Global Health Fellowship, here’s what she had to say: Public health and global health are SO important for everyone, but especially future health care providers. Taking the time to educate yourself about health care conditions around the world will help open your eyes to the backgrounds and social cond...itions of those around you. Understanding the social determinants of health can be the difference between a good provider and an amazing provider. This is the kind of organization you want to be working with if you are passionate about global health! Since volunteering with FIMRC, Danielle is now attending medical school at Touro College. Thanks, Danielle! We can’t wait to see what your future holds, and hope you volunteer with us again soon! Interested in learning more? Visit fimrc.org/volunteer and start your journey today

Another amazing photo entry! My name is Len and I went on my first medical mission to Cavite, Philippines in 2016 with FIMRC. One of my favorite experiences was visiting the pediatric oncology floor in Philippine General Hospital. Attached is a picture when I met Louise (consent was given for the picture by Louise and her mother). Forever grateful for the work you do! Inspired to do another mission @pitachips

Virtual Volunteer Spotlight! Today, we’re highlighting returning volunteer, Sofia Davis. Sofia volunteered at FIMRC Project La Merced, Peru in 2018. She was a great Fellow both then and now! Recently, Sofia participated in FIMRC’s Virtual Global Health Fellowship program, where she continued to contribute to sustainable projects at our project sites. Volunteering at the FIMRC site in La Merced in 2018 was a phenomenal experience both on a personal level and on a professio...nal level. I learned so much about healthcare in low-resource settings, greatly improved my conversational and medical Spanish, was able to shadow, and learn about Peruvian culture. So, when I found out that FIMRC was doing virtual fellowships, I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn more about healthcare in Latin America and reconnect with the La Merced FIMRC team. The program was a great way to learn more about global health and health programs in other countries. Thank you, Sofia! We hope to see you at our project sites, soon See more
