Good luck with finals!! You’ve got this!

University of Pennsylvania Career Services 08.12.2020

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Tara McCaffrey, COL '22, found that her summer internship at NeuroSpine erased any doubts about her career path. "Being the first in my family to pursue a career in medicine, this clinical experience provided me with great insight into the daily life of a surgeon, and particularly a neurosurgeon. Starting on my first day in the office, I was welcomed by an amazing staff and was exposed to tons of medical jargon. The importance of patient-physician relations...hips and the true compassion, patience, and empathy involved were undeniable. I had always wanted to pursue a career in medicine but questioned if I would truly enjoy the day-to-day life since I never had the chance to see what it would truly be like; however, my summer experience gave me that chance and erased any ounce of doubt." University of Pennsylvania Career Services 03.12.2020

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: William Wang, WH '22, intern at Lair East Labs in NYC, an early stage tech accelerator that invests in pre-seed stage businesses and helps them grow. For William, the internship became as much about career exploration as it did investing: "At Lair East Labs, one major part of my role was researching and sourcing potential investments. This experience exposed me to dozens, if not hundreds, of early-stage startups and helped me build a framework to assess wh...ich companies might succeed and which might not. In addition, hearing input from mentors about how they analyzed investments was not only very interesting, but also helped me become a better investor myself. For certain companies, I did even deeper research, working with other interns to write detailed reports to guide investment decisions. To work on materials that directly influenced the partners’ investment decisions was very rewarding for me, and I really enjoyed digging deeper into companies and industries I never knew about." STUDENT SPOTLIGHT - Joshua Baek, COL ’23. Joshua interned at Ravv, a venture capital firm based out of Milpitas, California focused on intercontinental deep tech incubation and investments. What Joshua found was surprising: "While there is some aspect of competition among VCs, I’ve found that there is something to be said about the sense of community. Getting to intern with Ravv afforded me not only a rich network of VC-preneurs within the firm, but an even richer, more vibrant community online." "I can say without a doubt, I learned so much in such a short time. I hope to bring my knowledge back to campus in the fall and help make Penn a zero waste community. And just as much I’d like to take my skills to learn better academically and lead outside the classroom."... STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Stephanie Acquaye, NUR ’21, who provided administrative support as an intern at Everyday Miracles, a doula organization in Minneapolis, Minnesota which provides education, physical resources, and doulas to expectant parents. "With the timing of this internship, I was given a front seat to watch, learn from, and support the efforts of this community-based organization in working to ensure parents are still supported and able to receive education and wellness services during such a large-scale health crisis. I was amazed by the efficiency and impact of such a small yet dedicated team of individuals, and inspired by the speed at which they adjusted to the demands of serving families in the midst of a pandemic." STUDENT SPOTLIGHT - Katherine Shao, COL-WH '22, intern at Click Therapeutics. "Working at a startup also meant I had the incredible opportunity of interacting with senior management. For one of my main projects, I conducted a deep dive analysis on a potential collaboration opportunity in an emerging digital health sector. I actually had the chance, as an intern, to present my findings and strategic recommendations to the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) and the entire strategy team. The feedback they gave me afterwards helped me hone my strategic mindset and representational skills, valuable lessons I can apply to both my coursework and my career." STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Charlene Canning, WH '23. As the Supreme Court reconvenes today, it's the perfect time highlight Charlene's work. She received funding from Career Services and Wharton Summer Program for Undergraduate Research to study the impact of corporate cases ruled on by the Supreme Court since 1883. "I provided my own analysis and evaluation of the morality of corporate enfranchisement and what legal strategy may include in the future. Most of the paper analyzes hi...storical and legal context to determine the impacts corporate law has on individual people. Throughout the paper, I adopt a lens of judicial realism to explain how corporate personhood is ultimately a feat that demonstrates the true potential of accountability in United States appellate courts." STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Elliot Bones, COL ’21, intern with Philly Thrive, he community-led environmental justice organization. Says Elliot of his experience: "I sought an internship with Philly Thrive because I believe in community organizing as a means to bring about environmental justice. When I talk about the climate crisis with people I often lament, using general terms, the disparate impacts that the crisis will have on under served black and brown populations. This stateme...nt is incomplete. What this internship reinforced for me is that the climate crisis and integrally related cataclysms, such as this pandemic, do not create inequalities; they aggravate, and result, from inequalities that have caused people, predominantly under served black and brown people, to suffer for centuries." STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Megan Striff-Cave, COL ’23. This summer, Megan interned with United States Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). "Working during both the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests was eye-opening. Part of my job was using iQ, a communications and process management tool, to listen to voicemails, read email, and look at faxes sent from constituents. [...] Oftentimes, these people would discuss their connections to these pertinent issues, and through this work, I gained the invaluable perspective of different communities from my home state." STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Lelinna Hinh, SP2 '21. Despite disruptions caused by the pandemic, Lelinna worked with Jodvia Hill, Executive Director for the Philadelphia Engagement for Women. "Even with how quickly and rapidly paced City Hall is, I was still amazed at how everyone still made time for one another. Director Hill made it clear that she cared for the people in Philadelphia but also cared for those who worked in her office." She made sure to let those around her know she ap...preciated the work they did each and every day. Even though, I learned very quickly how busy Director Hill was between meetings, phone calls running to different departments, but she made sure to always find time for me whether to answer questions or to sit down and have a chat." STUDENT SPOTLIGHT - Zoe Moscovici, COL ’21. Zoe worked this summer at Penn on a mixed-method research protocol to learn about the experiences of transgender highschoolers on their commute to high school. As an Urban Studies major, this was a great experience in both qualitative and quantitative research methods for my upcoming senior research project. This was also a rare opportunity to develop research skills in my niche field of interest: gender and sexuality. I’m very grateful for this summer position, and I hope that this research can be used to better support the safety and well-being of transgender youth. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Gergely Gyumolcsos, COL ’22. Gergely spent the summer interning at small real estate firm that specializes in the hospitality sector, which was hit particularly hard during the pandemic. "Working in the hospitality sector, I witnessed the harsh realities of the pandemic’s effect on the general economy. Lodging businesses were especially hit hard and many hotels had to close down and lay off most of their staff. This is where I think my firm’s work made some... difference. For example, we were looking at many deals to provide rescue capital to hotels to help them get through the pandemic and consequently help people keep their jobs. Knowing this helped me keep motivated while I was working through countless excel models." STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Vincenzo Ferriola, Weitzman School of Design '21 Vincenzo interned at Philadelphia's Department of Urban Agriculture, working on their plan "Growing from the Root," focusing on environmental and social justice. "Though this internship, I came to understand the importance of writing policies and recommendations that are truly directed towards populations that have historically been marginalized. Urban agriculture is not a new practice. Urban agriculture is n...ot a white practice. Philadelphians have been growing food for decades. With development pressures, gardens are not seen as a permanent land use, and many growing spaces have been built over. While impacting all growers, this struggle is the most inequitable towards black and brown communities as they have had limited access to resources and land attainment. Therefore, Growing from the Root is an effort to center black and brown voices to deliver change that will uplift and support black and brown growers for generations."
