On this day in 1964, Martin Luther King, Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. At 35 years old, he was the youngest person to ever receive this award. He donated the prize money, valued at approximately $54,000, to the civil rights movement. A year earlier, Martin Luther had delivered his I Have a Dream speech during the historic March on Washington. Currently on extended loan from Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Nicholas, these photographs by Danny Lyon capture the march and Luther ...King, Jr. combating racial inequality through nonviolence. Between 1957 and 1968, Luther King, Jr. would go on to speak over twenty-five hundred times and travel over six million miles in support of the civil rights movement. Danny Lyon (America, b. 1942). It’s time for another #FunFactFriday! This screen is part of a pair that illustrates chapters from the The Tale of Genji, a romantic novel written by Lady Murasaki in the early 11th century. You may not know that, rather than arrange the scenes chronologically, the artist chose to organize them by season. Come see it in person and learn more about it! We are open to F&M students, faculty, and professional staff Tuesday to Sunday, noon to 4 pm. Keep checking back for more online exhibitions and activities to enjoy from home too! Tosa Mitsusada (Japanese, 17381806). "Six-fold screen with scenes from The Tale of Genji," mid 18th C. Opaque watercolor and gold leaf on paper. On Long Term Loan from William F. Honaman, ‘55.
