Minutes before noon on Tuesday April 19th, the Reamstown Volunteers and numerous mutual aid departments were dispatched for a reported commercial building fire at the Boose Aluminum Foundry on N. Reamstown Road. Units arrived with a well involved fire in the front middle section of the building, and requested a second alarm to bring additional units and manpower. Crews worked together to successfully stop and hold the fire to the original building of origin. This prevented th...e fire spread to the large rear portion of the business. Crews from Reamstown and MANY other departments worked to bring the fire under control in a few hours. Crews remained on scene until around 7PM to wet down all remaining hot spots, and returned to station to begin the extensive cleanup process. In total, crews from Reamstown alone put over 2400+ feet of various size hose on the ground, which all needed to be washed later on. Crews finally cleared station around 9:30PM. We would like to give a sincere thanks to the following: -All our mutual aid departments who assisted -Our standby companies -The 911 dispatchers -Martins Mulch for the heavy machinery -Two Cousins Pizza for food and refreshments -The Village Haus Restaurant for food and refreshments

This evening for weekly drill night, the volunteers took advantage of the nice weather and spent the evening on pumping the apparatus. With several drivers In our engine driving class, any pump time our drivers can get is valuable. Units drafted out of the shallow creek beside the station, supplied multiple hand lines, and set up a water tower using the ladder truck. We were able to pull 1600+ gallons per minute out of the creek (while dumping it back in). We’re always looking for new members. Stop by any Tuesday night to see what we’re up too, and to ask any questions!

On Saturday April 9th, the volunteers took part in an all day Flashover training class held at our station. Crews utilized the PA State Fire Academy Flashover training simulator, which simulates a flashover condition in which all contents of a fire room or space get so hot they they reach their ignition temperature and ignite. Many firemen have been seriously injured or killed over the years due to flashover conditions, so this training was extremely valuable. Crews took t...urns sitting on the floor of the simulator while the instructors ignited wood fires towards the front top of the simulator. As the fire grew in size, the doors to the simulator would be closed causing the fire to starve itself of air. By starving the fire of air, crews could watch how the conditions inside would change, as the byproducts of combustion would collect and lower from the ceiling. As the doors or specific vents were opened, we could see how the fire once again grew in size and ignited the various gasses and byproducts over our heads. During the height of each burn, the temperatures towards the ceiling in the simulator would reach over 1200+ degrees. Shortly after crews exited the final simulator burn of the day, the department was alerted for a vehicle accident on Route 222. As crews were boarding the apparatus to respond, the 911 center recalled the department. We’d like to thank the fire academy instructors for an excellent day of training.

We would like to apologize to anyone that was unable to receive any of the free Goldfish today. We ran out of our remaining goldfish very quickly due to the overwhelming response to the event. This Goldfish giveaway started back in mid-December when Pepperidge Farms provided us with 3,000 cases of Goldfish to share with other Emergency Services agencies. We reached out to neighboring Fire and EMS agencies, and due to the size of the donation we also reached out to local non-p...rofits. Over the past 4 weeks we have been coordinating pick-ups with these organizations. We wanted to also enable the public to be able to directly receive the Goldfish, so for the past three weeks our volunteers have been spending their Saturdays handing out cases of the Goldfish. Today’s event received additional media exposure which resulted in a significant turnout when we were nearing the end of our supply. We again apologize to anyone that came for the Goldfish giveaway and was unable to receive any. It appears our expertise is indeed in emergency incidents and not logistics.

It's been a busy sleepless morning for our volunteers answering 2 calls for working fires. Station 17-1 assisted Stevens 17-3 around 01:00 hours this morning with a working mobile home fire. While crews were still cleaning up from the first fire, shortly after 05:00 hours members handled a first due working tractor trailer fire at Acme warehouse. We'd like to thank all the assisting departments on the tractor trailer fire. Smokestown, Stevens, Adamstown fire departments and Fivepointville EMS, as well as the East Cocalico police dept, PA state police, and the Lancaster County hazmat team.
