Lord, I will obey you simply because you are worthy of it and it is my duty. But don’t let my service to you remain at that level. Show me your beauty - attract my heart, capture my imagination, so that I find joyful pleasure in serving you. Amen.

When I realize that through Jesus’ cross-bearing substitutionary sacrifice, I’m already accepted by God and I don’t have to do anything to achieve His approval, a seismic shift in the internal structure of my heart happens. His grace changes my motivation for righteous living. Now I don’t obey God because I have to, or in order to get things from him. I obey now because I want to, to please, know, and resemble the one who gave me salvation for free. Fear and anxiety give way to freedom and strength. Free ice cream doesn’t change you, it will only rock your taste buds for twenty minutes, but free salvation will rock your heart and move you to your core, and is enough to last a lifetime. Believe the gospel and only then will life truly begin!

We only love God as much as we love the person we like the least. - Dorothy Day This could be a good litmus test to see if we really believe the gospel and love God. To the degree that we demonize or marginalize others, or give ourselves a break on being unloving towards others, is the degree to which we’re self-justifying and not believing the gospel, and ultimately not loving God. The question we should be asking ISN’T, How do I love God more? The question we should ask is, What about the gospel is not hitting home in my heart? What about his cross-bearing graciousness despite my sin is not having its deepening effect in my heart? When we first begin to understand His substitutionary love for us, only then can we begin to love others we may not like.
