"I don't only want to do this type of work. I want to work on a series on Black America, about just us, without pointing outward to 'the man.' I don't want my work to just represent that. I want it to be about us and our own struggles within ourselves." -- Renowned local artist, Laurie Cooper, talking about her piece "America" and her exhibit "From the Past Facing Forward," showing through April 5 at The Arts Portal. #ArtistTalk www.theartsportal.net

In 2008, I was elected President of the United States, becoming the first African-American commander-in-chief. I served two terms as the 44th president of the United States. WHO AM I? Ok, so you probably know who I am, but can you figure out why the artist gave me a blue eye and a brown eye, the partial blue lips, or why my face is sectioned off into puzzle pieces?... To find out the inspiration for my portrait -- "Peace of Mind" -- join us on President's Day, Monday, February 18 for Artist Talk: "From the Past Facing Forward," featuring selected works by Laurie Cooper, renowned local artist. Ms. Cooper will be walking through her exhibit, providing insight into the inspiration for her work. For more info go to www.theartsportal.net This event is from 4:30 -- 7:30pm at The Arts Portal. It is FREE and open to the public! #BlackHistoryMonth #PresidentsDay #TheArtsPortal
