Little known facts about our great city It all started in the 1930’s without the cheese A South Philly hot dog vendor who goes by the name of Pat Olivieri, decided to grill some beef from the butcher and put it on an Italian roll. A passing cab driver caught a whiff and asked for the steak sandwich. As you might expect, word spread quickly throughout the cabbie rumor mill and drivers from all over the city paid Olivieri a visit for his popular steak sandwich. It wasn’t too long before Pat decided to open up the infamous ‘Pat’s Steaks’. Interestingly enough, cheese wasn’t introduced to the steak sandwich until the 1940’s! Then along came Geno’s in 1966, and the rest is history! #phillyhistory #foodforthought @ Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
