Ah, the wonders of nature. When the old orchard was removed from this site, the leftover stumps and roots were pushed into a pit and burned. Last February, we covered the embers in three feet of soil. Next came sorghum and tillage radishes, part of our crop rotation. Well, the radishes were so effective at aerating the soil that, after 9 months, the fire restarted! We still plan to plant new exciting apple cultivars here this coming spring.
