The first indoor bowling lanes were built in New York City in 1840. Now there are nearly 6,500 bowling alleys across the country.

Did you know that, in bowling, if you bowl a strike immediately after a spare or if you bowl a spare right after a strike, it is called a Dutch 200? To bowl a perfect game, however, you must achieve a score of 300.

The automatic pinsetter has been in use at most bowling alleys since the 1950s. It is a surprisingly complex machine consisting of many parts. The rake is the bar which sweeps away pins that have been knocked down so they can be reset.

Until 1895, a 200 score represented a perfect game in bowling. That changed thanks to the American Bowling Congress, which put into place modern scoring rules that set the top score at 300.

An unusual type of bowling game is played to this day in Edinburgh, where players swing a fingerless ball from between their legs and heave them at pins. The players then flops into their lane by throwing themselves onto their stomachs.

Regulation bowling pins are made of hard maple wood and are exactly 15 inches tall. To meet official regulation requirements, each pin must weigh between 3 pounds, 6 ounces and 3 pounds, 10 ounces.
