Feeling so many emotions about this historical moment. One of the things that comes to mind is the idea of having big hopes and dreams when we’re young. Just as the ancestors and elders have paved a way for us, by being the first woman, and the first Black and South Asian woman to become Vice President of these United States, Senator Kamala Harris has now blazed a path for many to come after her. Many will be inspired to dream big and accomplish great things, not just for themselves, but for the betterment of our world. For those of us who are a little more seasoned, may we be reinvigorated and may we remember that we have the power to make great things happen. Congratulations to Madam Vice President Elect, Kamala Devi Harris!

Having come directly from South Africa, I wasn’t prepared for the way it manifests in the U.S. and quite simply, I lacked the tools to both process and deflect it. The lack of respect and empathy for Black people, especially Black women, caught me off guard, although it’s by no means unique to Spitzer. I suppose I’d say in the end that my resignation was a profound act of self-preservation. -Dr. Lesley Lokko That’s a powerful statement from a fellow sister in the academy.
