Fanny Jackson Coppin Music Program

Today we had our virtual graduation for the Jackson 8th graders. Usually at this time I’m posting HOME’s year-end photos documenting the current cohort, but sadly this couldn’t happen this year. There have been about 150 kids in HOME over the past ten years, many who have played vital roles in the development and the continuation of the band. Chelsea Liu has been one of the most integral members during that time. I met with Chelsea and her mother, Shinta Liu when Chelsea s...tarted the 4th grade and asked her if she wanted to join HOME and if they felt she could handle the commitmentand here we are five years later. We’ve had well over 400 rehearsals together, dozens of gigs, jammed with rock stars, made a documentary film, and ate a ton of pizza and cake. All in all, a pretty good ride! I used to pull Chelsea from class all the time to teach her parts to songs, and by the end she’d be learning everything and teaching it to me. Her parents, Shinta and Frank were always there for me/HOME. Driving us around, buying food, taking photos/videos, etc., and I am so incredibly grateful for all they’ve done. It’s always hard to see the kids go. I’m luckyI hear from many of them often. I tried to convince Chelsea to repeat the 8th grade, and then I tried to convince her to go to high school close to Jackson so she could stay in HOME and help me with the new cohort. She’s off to Central next year, but assures me she’ll be back at least one day a week. I hope so:)

I am now organizing a Drum Club for grades 4 and up. I will await responses in order to plan accordingly. A drum set is not necessary. We will explore Rhythm (reading), rudiments, beats and famous/historic drummers. Please email me at [email protected] if you are interested in having your child participate. Please indicate if your child has has any experience/training, if they have a drum set, a practice pad, and/or a pair of sticks.

Have a keyboard/piano at home!? Join our remote piano club! As of now we have classes for 2nd/3rd graders at 11:30AM on Thursdays. Classes for upper grades starting as well, so please email me at [email protected] for more information.

Hi all! Along with my remote general music classes, I have some instrumental clubs starting for students who have access to instruments. I have 2 sections of Guitar Club for grades 3 and up. A beginners sections which will meet on Thursdays at 12PM, and an intermediate section which will meet on Thursdays at 12:30PM. Hello all! An update on remote music classes: As of now I have remote general music classes for Kindergarten through 3rd Grade, as well as Ukulele, Piano, Recorder and Guitar classes. CHROMEBOOK DISTRIBUTION UPDATE: We are working closely with the district to coordinate Chromebook distribution in a safe and efficient manner. Chromebook distribution is tentatively scheduled for the week of April 13th. There will be specific dates and times assigned by last name to maintain social distancing. ... SPIRIT WEEK at Jackson!!!

For all our Jackson Community....I will be attempting to do some remote learning with our Jackson students. As of now it looks like I will be using ZOOM, as it seems like the platform of choice (I'm open to suggestions). At this point I intend to stick to some of the things we do in class, and that I think might be feasible (ukulele songs, recorders, guitars, drums/rhythm lessons). For students interested in singing we could work on the material that we had been preparing ...for our Spring Concert, or other songs. For kids in HOME/HOME Jr. we could work on some old/new material. I am trying to design some listening/historical lessons as well.
