The earliest valentines were homemade using ink and watercolors. Manufactured cards were introduced in the 1800s, but largely finished by hand with heavy fringes, spun glass, imitation gems, mother of pearl and even shells. Paper lace was introduced in 1834 by Joseph Addenbrooke who worked for the London papermaker Dobbs & Co. Every bit as intricate as the real thing, it was die cut and applied in layers. Paper lace remained popular well into the 1920s. See our collection of Vintage Valentines, now on display at The Confluence!
Congratulations to New Castle, PA artist, Aaron Elliot, for representing the United States in this international exhibition!
