Another weekend of Department 1’s members in class with our friends at Greater Valley EMS and Rescue. This weekend members were learning and training in high angle rope rescue techniques. As always, our members are working endlessly to sharpen all skill sets to ensure safety of our citizens.

The past few days consisted of members from Department 1 traveling to Elk Lake in Susquehanna County to assist with the search for a missing fisherman. Our boat was requested for use of our sonar capabilities. Other agencies on scene included Tunkhannock Dive Team, Germania SCUBA, Ledgedale Dive/Rescue, Elk Lake Fire Department, United Rescue, Montrose Minutemen, Pennsylvania State Police, and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Athens Borough Fire Department is committed to providing services to not only our local residents, but those throughout the Commonwealth.

LT Dale McConnell came in to the Sayre Post Office to officially lower the flag to half-staff in observation of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. E...very year since 1992, flags have been lowered in an effort to remember America’s fallen firefighters. LT McConnell of the Athens Boro Fire Department lowered the flag in honor of Edward Daniels who was killed in the line of duty May of 1938 from his department. See more

This weekend members completed the PA Fish and Boat Commission’s Advanced Line Systems Rescue class. They learned and demonstrated line systems, movable control points using a boat, tethered swimming, direct contact rescues, and additional self rescue methods. These members now hold 1 of 3 of PFBC’s technician level certifications. Special thanks to Instructors Knapp and Brelsford.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 2, 2020 Route 199 Reconstruction Project in Athens and Sayre Boroughs, Bradford County Montoursville, PA A four year reconstruction project is set to begin next week on Route 199 in Athens and Sayre Boroughs, Bradford County. The 2.6-mile project is located .44 miles north of the intersection with Route 1056 (Front Street) in Athens Borough to the intersection with Interstate 86 / New York 17 (Southern Tier Expressway) at the New York state l...ine in Sayre Borough. The project will begin at the New York state line and work south. On Tuesday, September 8, Route 199 will be closed to northbound traffic between Cayuta Street and Interstate 86 / New York 17 (Southern Tier Expressway) at the New York state line, while the contractor, Kriger Construction, begins a full depth pavement reconstruction. Work includes drainage improvements, utility relocation, sidewalk and curb improvements, ADA curb ramp installations, traffic signal upgrades, driveway adjustments, signing and pavement markings and other miscellaneous construction. Detour information: Northbound cars will follow a 3.4-mile detour using Mohawk Street, North Keystone Avenue, Route 1069 (Pitney and Elmira Streets), Route 220, Interstate 86 / New York 17 (Southern Tier Expressway) and Route 199 (Bradford Street). Southbound cars will be maintained in the work zone. Truck traffic northbound and southbound will follow a 7.7-mile detour using Route 220 and Interstate 86 / New York 17 (Southern Tier Expressway). Motorists should expect alternating lane closures with flagging during construction. Motorists should be alert, slow down, expect delays, watch for changing traffic patterns and drive with caution through the work zone. Kriger Construction, Inc., is the primary contractor on this $16.5 million, four year roadway reconstruction project. The project is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2024. Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, and relevant training. This weekend three additional Department 1 members partook in the PA Fish and Boat Commission’s WRER class with members from surrounding departments. This class is the entry level water rescue class for responders and focuses on shore based and self rescue techniques. These members are now eligible to take the advanced technician level classes.
