Midshipmen Highlight! Over winter break, gyms and workout facilities across Pennsylvania have been closed. However, brothers and fellow Penn State midshipmen Jacob and Kevin Zavrotny decided to take matters into their own hands and build their very own pull-up bar. They have been working out, prepping for the Physical Readiness Test, and learning obstacle course movements such as the "college boy" roll.

Between the Quarantine 15 and the starchy and high fat foods of the holiday season, you may have gained a bit of weight. Dietary supplements may be a tempting quick way to lose those few pounds, but they are not always safe. January is Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center’s Healthy Weight Month. Find tips for lifestyle changes to lose weight safely at go.usa.gov/xPJ5E.

Last weekend, Charlie Company participated in the fall FEX (Field Exercise) in an effort to allow the Marine Option MIDN a chance to train in a field environment. It began with a 6.2 mile hike, followed by a camo paint class. Shortly after, the MIDN conducted land navigation using a pace count to reach each point in the woods, while given an azimuth and distance. Next, the 1/C MIDN gave a tactics class to the rest of the company prior to engaging in the Small Unit Leadership Evaluation (SULE) and Leadership Reaction Course (LRC). The purpose of SULEs and LRCs are to help build leadership skills and decision-making skills in environments of high stress, limited time, and uncertainty. The purpose of this training is to prepare our MIDN for Officer Candidates School (OCS), The Basic School (TBS), and the fleet.

For their first few days back on campus, Penn State Marine Option Midshipmen participated in and conducted classes with the best resources they could. While some 1/C Midshipmen conducted a Customs and Courtesies & Uniform Regulations class for the 4/C, 2/C and 3/C Midshipmen received a mapping & terrain model class from the other 1/C. 4/C Midshipmen were also introduced to their 2/C mentors for the semester. The purpose of these classes is to share vital information and to allow the incoming freshmen to understand their positions and responsibilities within the ROTC program.

Our Navy option seniors recently received their service assignments. This assignment indicates what community they will enter into once they commission as Ensigns in May. Our Penn State midshipmen were assigned to many different types of communities. These include the Surface Warfare, Submarine, Aviation, and Special Warfare communities. Our seniors can't wait to start their military careers after they graduate!
