Six major nuclear material processing tanks received over the weekend at the Savannah River Site (SRS) have been successfully installed in the Site’s Salt Waste... Processing Facility (SWPF), signifying a key milestone in the construction of this major cleanup facility designed to advance the Department of Energy’s (DOE) priority to reliably complete radioactive liquid waste treatment, safely manage the treated waste and meet commitments to close liquid waste tanks at SRS. The construction milestone accounts for six of 10 total processing tanks, ranging in volume capacity from 6,000 45,000 gallons, to be installed in the facility, with the four remaining tanks to be shipped to the Site in early June. With these key vessels in place, SWPF construction progresses with piping and facility floors to be completed and the facility roof put into place. The newly installed processing tanks will be used for treating radioactive salt waste, a by-product of the Cold War nuclear weapons program currently stored in 47 underground tanks at SRS. Once operational, SWPF will employ state-of-the-art waste treatment technologies to process approximately 33 million gallons of the stored radioactive salt wastes for final disposition. Parsons Government Services of Pasadena, California, is DOE’s prime contractor for designing, building, starting up and operating the SWPF for one year. Full plant operations are currently scheduled for late 2015. The large nuclear materials processing tanks are manufactured by Precision Custom Components of York, PA, and are being shipped by barge to Hardeeville, SC, and offloaded onto tractor trailers for safe transport to SRS.
