An update to our recent post about fraudulent phone calls from scammers pretending to be working for the Social Security Administration from Stephen Asbel: A short time ago, I received one of these calls. The call had an electronic or electronically distorted voice threatening to cut off account due to possible illegal activity and saying I should "press 1" to speak to someone about it. I did not press 1. One insidious aspect to this scam is that in the caller ID that come...s up, the call appears to come from 1-800-772-1213. That is, in fact, the toll-free number to call Social Security so whoever is doing this, is trying to make it appear that this call is coming from the government - this is often referred to as "spoofing.". Again, these calls are NOT legitimate. Social Security has issued a warning that their employees do not make such telephone calls and and that if you receive such a call, you should hang up - do not give information. If you have concern that Social Security may need some information, you should make a call TO Social Security. Do not give any information or respond to one of these calls that may appear to be FROM Social Security. See more
