Braddock Water Authority responds to the PaDEP/Allegheny County Health Department October 26th Lead in Braddock Water Alert Braddock Water Authority wants to en...sure that its customers are well informed on the details of the October 26 alert warning residents about lead in the Braddock water supply. The Braddock Water Authority replaced all mainline pipes in 1990-1991. There are no lead pipes in our distribution system. The authority has replaced every service line to the curb box which is the limit of our legal authority. Some customers may still have lead lines on their side of the curb box which is the property owner’s responsibility to replace. The Braddock Water Authority has done everything legally possible to eliminate lead from our water. Any lead contamination reported by PaDEP would have come from the customer’s internal plumbing over which we have no control. As a courtesy, the Braddock Water Authority can let customers know if they do have a lead service line on their property, but it is up to the property owner to remove and replace their lead pipes. The water the Braddock Water Authority purchases does contain a chemical that inhibits the leaching of lead from pipes if the customer’s piping has lead. We realize the importance of the PaDEP testing results. This is why over the last three years, Braddock has participated in the PaDEP lead/copper study whose participants are only Braddock residents who live in homes that still have lead/copper lines. The results reported in the DEP and Allegheny Health Department October alert are based on the outcomes from the recent September testing of 15 households that have lead/copper lines. Out of the 15 households tested, only 3 had higher than acceptable lead levels. Participants in the study have always been informed about the results of the test, normally prior to the results going public, with recommendations for removing the lead/copper lines whether the report was positive or negative. While the Borough of Braddock and the Braddock Water Authority were verbally informed this past Thursday, October 25th, that there was a problem and an official report was forthcoming, to date, we have yet to receive the report from the PaDEP. Braddock Water Authority has always followed health mandates in regards to residential lines that are lead or copper based. We follow Allegheny County Health regulations and PaDEP rules as it relates to announcing the outcomes of testing, as well as providing education to the public on what to do if they have lead lines. Additionally, we inform home owners on their responsibilities as it regards changing out lead lines and direct them to possible resources. As a courtesy, the Braddock Water Authority can let customers know if they do have a lead service line on their property but it is up to the property owner to remove and replace their lead pipes. The water we purchase does contain a chemical to inhibit the leaching of lead from pipes if your pipes have lead.
