From home theater system receivers and guitar pedals to light dimmer switches and electrical motors, the ability to change how loud or quiet something is a crucial part of electronics! There are many types of variable passive resistors from thermistors(heat), photoresistors(light), and mechanical movement resistors such as linear and rotary dials. Functionally they all serve a similar purpose, and that is to adjust the flow of electricity. A potentiometer, or pot for short,... is a common type of variable resistor switch that consists of three main parts. A resistive element, the wiper (sliding contact), and the rotating shaft which includes the conductive wiper and moves the wiper from one end to the other. Electrical terminals at each end of the element, increase or decrease the flow of current depending on where the wiper is currently touching the element. See more
