On this date, 26th October 1640, Charles I is forced to sign the Treaty of Ripon, bringing to an end the Bishop's Wars with the Covenanters. It followed the Cov...enanters success at the battle of Newburn and their capture of the important northern city of Newcastle. The treaty said that the English government would have to pay the Covenanter army, which was still occupying England's northern counties, 850 a day until a full peace treaty was agreed. Charles therefore was forced to call the Long Parliament in November to get money to do this. A full peace treaty, the Treaty of London, was eventually agreed in August 1641. Charles agreed to confirm the acts of the recent General Assemblies, including the abolition of bishops. The King's power was being curtailed and Parliaments was growing, bringing a little known MP for Cambridge, Oliver Cromwell, onto the scene.
