December 26, 1960 NFL Championship Game Franklin Field, PA Eagles 17, Packers 13... "It was just another afternoon in the life of Charles P. Bednarik. Played 60 minutes of rock 'em-sock 'em football, if you don't count punt returns and kickoffs. Knocked the other team's star-Paul Hornung- out of the game with a clean shoulder tackle. Made the game-saving tackle on the last play of the National Football League championship whoopdedo. And if you noticed, said Buck Shaw, they didn't run too much to his side of the field. Just another day in the life of Charles P. Bednarik." --Larry Merchant, Philadelphia Daily News, December 27, 1960.

On May 1, 1925 Philadelphia Eagles legend Chuck Bednarik was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Bednarik began playing football at Bethlehem's Liberty High Scho...ol. Following his graduation from high school, he entered the U.S. Army Air Forces and served as a B-24 waist-gunner with the Eighth Air Force. Bednarik flew on 30 combat missions over Germany, for which he was awarded the Air Medal and 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and 4 Battle Stars. Bednarik subsequently attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he was a 60-minute man, excelling as both center on offense and a linebacker on defense, as well as occasional punter. He was a 3-time All-American, and was elected a member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1969. Bednarik was the first player drafted in the 1949 NFL Draft, by the Eagles, starring on both offense (as a center) and defense (as a linebacker). He was a member of the Eagles' NFL Championship teams in 1949 and 1960. Concrete Charlie played his entire career with the Eagles from 1949 to 1962. In 1960, Bednarik knocked Frank Gifford of the Giants out of football for over 18 months, with one of the most famous tackles in NFL history. Bednarik proved extremely durable, missing just 3 games in his 14 seasons. He was named All-Pro 8 times, and was the last of the NFL's "Sixty-Minute Men," players who played both offense and defense on a regular basis. Bednarik's nickname, "Concrete Charlie," originated from his off-season career as a concrete salesman for the Warner Company, not (contrary to popular belief) from his reputation as a ferocious tackler. He was inducted in Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967. Bednarik passed away on March 21, 2015 at the age of 89. (Photo Credit: Gridiron Greats) #ConcreteCharlie #Eagles See more
