Grooming your horse is just as important as dental and hoof care. Brushing and currying removes dirt to stop the growth of bacteria. Examining your horse’s body for growths and wounds can also prevent possible infection.

Horses must have access to an adequate amount of good quality feed in the form of roughage (pasture, hay or chaff) to keep them in good body condition.

Your horse should appear bright and alert, and you should know what’s ‘normal’ for your horse. Look out for signs of sickness, such as seeming dull or restless, and signs of discomfort, such as excessive rolling and kicking.

Horses must have enough space to walk and run around, unless they are exercised daily. Stabled horses must have enough space to walk forward, turn around, lie down and roll.
