The United States Military Academy known as West Point, which has been educating American military leaders for over 200 years, relies on heating oil to keep its corps of cadets warm throughout the cold winter months in New York State.

One of the biggest advantages of synthetic oils is their active temperature range. Synthetics will flow better when the temperatures get low while still being able to lubricate well at high temperatures. This flexibility makes them the perfect choice for high performance applications.

People have been using oil for thousands of years, for various purposes, including medicinal ones. Oil was once used to treat illnesses such as frostbite.

Synthetic oils were originally developed for sub-zero temperatures in the 1940s. During the 1950s and 60s, they were used for the hot temperatures of jet engines. They finally were formulated so they could be used for automobile lubrication in the 1970s.

Of all the fuel oil types, kerosene has the longest history. It was first distilled and refine as far back as the 800s by the Persian scholar Rhazes. It was used then for heating and cooking, but also in lamps for light.

Coal mines today aren’t like the old-fashioned coal mines with dark tunnels that reach deep underground. Most coal mines in the US are surface mines, where miners take off the top layers to make sure they get as much coal as possible.
