We got to see lots of familiar faces today in Chem Seminar! Alumni Kayla Hess '18 who is currently at Vanderbilt University presented her research entitled "Exploring interactions between amyloid proteins and nanoparticles via 2D IR spectroscopy." In addition to our current students and faculty, we had several other alumni zoom in as well which was really fun! Thanks for presenting Kayla!
This semester is the FIRST semester of our new lab called Synthesis lab! In this lab, our students have been learning many laboratory and analytical techniques through both organic and inorganic reactions! They are KILLING IT thus far! Keep it up, guys!
We wanted to pass along some exciting news about alumni Haley Young ’19, who is currently a grad student in her 2nd year at Penn State University. She was just selected as a recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) award related to her research in Chemistry-Chemical Synthesis! The website for the fellowship is https://www.nsfgrfp.org and here is a brief explanation of the award: The NSF GRFP recognizes and supports outstandin...g graduate students in NSF-supported STEM disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited US institutions. The five-year fellowship includes three years of financial support including an annual stipend of $34,000 and a cost of education allowance of $12,000 to the institution. Haley graduated from Etown with a Chemistry-ACS degree with Dr. Toote as her research advisor and Dr. MacKay as her academic advisor. Congratulations Haley and we wish you continued success!

Today we had the pleasure of hosting alumni, Sam Brooks '16 for our weekly chem seminar! Sam is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania and presented his research entitled "Synthesis and Reactivity of Flexible Dicopper Bis(pyridinediimine) Macrocycles." We greatly appreciate his willingness to share his research and time with our students and faculty!

Last evening the department held our annual Gamma Sigma Epsilon (GSE) Chemistry Honor Society induction ceremony! GSE is the Rho Eta chapter of the national governing organization for excellence in Chemistry and related studies. Students with a grade point average of 3.3 or higher in chemistry are invited to join this prestigious group of student-scholars. New inductees for this year were majors Grace Childs, Kaitlyn Mercando, Lucas Stehle and John Talbott and minor Biyar Ahmed. Last year's inductee, senior Rachel Molino, hosted the ceremony along with the honor society's advisor, Dr. Rood. Below are some pictures Dr. Hoffman was able to capture from the ceremony held in Gibble Auditorium. Great job and congratulations to all!
