The COVID-19 virus is very real and we do have to be cognizant of that fact and exercise common sense practices to stay healthy and to minimize the transmission of the virus. Halloween is fast approaching. We should remain mindful of the fact that children are more than twice more likely to get hit by an automobile and lose their life on Halloween than any other time of the year. For that and other reasons here are some safety tips to help keep your child safe. Use reflective costumes or decorate them with reflective tape or decals. Also glow sticks and flashlights work well to help your child be seen by vehicle drivers. Cross streets at co...rners and remember to STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN before crossing. DON’T run!! Never cross between parked vehicles. Wear close fitting mask with large eye holes, or use non-toxic paint or make up to avoid any obstruction of your vision. Always test any make up or paint first to make sure they do not cause any skin or eye irritation. Trick or treating in areas and neighborhoods that you and your child know well will also add to a happy and safe time. Plan your child’s route and ensure that your older children travel in groups. For your younger child or children make it a time that they will remember. Enjoy the experience and walk with them, so they are properly supervised. Only visit well lit houses and NEVER go inside if invited by an adult that you do not know or trust. A parent or supervising adult should examine all treats before they are consumed by children, and consume only factory wrapped treats. Homemade treats or candies with loose wrappers should not be eaten. Remember that damaging other people’s property by playing pranks is a crime. Your Elk County Sheriff’s Office wishes everyone an enjoyable and safe Halloween.

The first Monday in September is reserved to honor and pay tribute to workers and their accomplishments across our county. Ergo, it is a time of celebration that is well deserved. That brings with it more vehicular traffic and consumption of alcoholic beverages. Plan ahead, do not drink and drive, and use seat belts. Those few simple tips can dramatically reduce highway crashes, injuries, and deaths. The Elk County Sheriff’s Office joins in this year’s Labor Day tribute and appreciation of our workers specific to Elk County, and send our warmest thanks to the achievements they have made in making Elk County a great place to live, work, and play.

As parents and students prepare for the first day of school slated for August 31st, the Elk County Sheriff’s Office cautions motorists in advance to ensure safe travels for both students, and people travelling on roadways. Early planning and preparation can go a long way to help ensure the safety of children heading back to school. Children can be very unpredictable and are not always aware of their surroundings. Obedience to the posted speed limits, especially within scho...ol zones is essential for the safety of students. The travelling public is asked to watch for school children beginning on August 31st, and to report any traffic violations to law enforcement. Additionally, parents are asked to teach their children to cross the street only where there is a designated crosswalk or crossing guard. The Elk County Sheriff’s Office thanks travelers, students, parents, and teachers for making it safer for students to return to school. See more
