Keep on the look-out for this delightful show!
Dear Friends, We are deeply saddened by the events of this last week and share the pain, grief and outrage that many of you are feeling. The senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless murders of so many Black people throughout our history demand systematic change, now. The sight of police and the national guard pitted against peaceful protests, while armed white demonstrators are free to enter the Michigan State House are jarring an...d discordant. As a theatre company dedicated to young audiences, we ask ourselves, what can we do? Our first steps are to recommit to our values, to our artists and to our community and to take a stand for justice, inclusion, opportunity and possibility. Black Lives Matter. We stand as allies with people of color. We believe that theatre has the power to illuminate, transform and heal. Through the stories we tell, children go on magical journeys of discovery and wonder. Our responsibility is to nurture, honor and respect their imaginations, providing opportunities for both self-reflection and delight. Our responsibility is to create opportunities for diverse artists and audiences to create and participate in this work. We are committed to diversifying our theatre company on all levels, including our board, our artistic staff, directors, stage management, designers and actors to better reflect the community we serve. We believe that theatre can hold up a mirror to society and open up new ways of seeing and being. Theatre brings solace and creates community through a shared experience. Theatre can bring meaning and perspective, it can uplift and expand our understanding of what it is to be human. At this time when social inequities are so blatant, we know we don’t have all the answers. We recognize that we are imperfect and we have much work to do. We need to stay present. We need to listen. We can no longer settle for the status quo. As Mitch Landrieu, the former Mayor of New Orleans, wrote in the NY Times: We cannot continue to go over, under or around the issue of race. We have to go through it.This requires new will. We must stand arm in arm to change who we are, so that we can become what we have always promised to be: equal, free and one. We are committed to this change. Love, blessings and light, Jennifer, Leslie, Landis, Zachary, the Artists and Board of Enchantment Theatre Company
We love creating shows that take our characters on a journey of self discovery! For example, in our production of The Phantom Tollbooth, Milo meets many delightful characters including Tock the Watchdog, The Humbug, and King Azaz. With their help he learns how precious time is!
Some of our most valuable and rewarding programs are our residencies! We are constantly astounded at the level of artistry that develops in our students, over just 8 weeks! Take a look at the scene this group has created, comment below and tell us what you see!
#tbt to our beautiful symphony production of Scheherazade! Something we miss the most during these times in being in a theatre with a full audience, a full orchestra, and full of anticipation for our performance. We look forward to being able to share moments like these again!
We are so inspired by the amazing performances of our students! In this delightful production, you can see the children using puppetry, masks and movement to tell the story of Ferdinand the Bull! We cannot wait to bring these skills and the magic of Enchantment back into schools!
The tortoise is victorious! We have missed being in schools and helping our brilliant students create shows of their own. Here's the final scene of a retelling of The Tortoise and The Hare,a show that reminds us that slow and steady wins the race. We cannot wait to enchant again!
#tbt to our beautiful symphony production of Mother Goose. This show follows Mother Goose, as she reflects on her life through a collection of fairy tales she spins for the audience. This production truly takes audiences on a journey, supported by a full symphony orchestra!
Oh how we miss this! The best part of our Enchantment Everywhere productions is getting to hear from the audience after the performance. Hearing how much the students imaginations have been opened by what they have just seen is inspiring.
We miss the excitement of waiting backstage before the curtain goes up! These students got to experience that excitement after creating their own original theatre piece as part of one of our residencies! We look forward to serving these communities again when we can do so safely!
#tbt to our beautiful production of Cinderella. This show (which we have revived several times) featured a bevy of delightful magic tricks, including turning a tiny pumpkin into Ella's gorgeous carriage for the ball. And of course, you remember what happens at midnight!
Oh how we miss the excitement of being on tour! Here is a picture from our national tour of The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, and it is one of our favorites. In this story, Milo meets a host of wacky characters, including Dr. Dischord and his assistant - The Awful Dynne!
#tbt the final bow with this amazing group! From our mission - "We believe that theatre has the power to illuminate, transform, and heal." The most significant joy we experience as arts educators is watching a student learn a new skill, and allowing it to open their imagination!
Another small section of the virtual project we have been working on! Of course, this is still a part of our very rough draft. But we have been developing the next iteration and we cannot wait to show our audiences! Can you guess from this little clip what story we are adapting?
Our virtual project is still in development, and going well! As any artist knows, creating a show means many iterations of your work are developed before an audience sees it. In the spirit of that, we wanted to share the intro we created, including a minor flub at the end! Enjoy!
#tbt to being in the classroom! ETC's Mission: We bring stories to life in a way that encourages children to dream about who they are and may become, to explore story from different perspectives, to think using inductive reasoning, and to connect to other people and ideas.
