This year students at Villanova produced a documentary about Philadelphia area veterans. This documentary highlights some of the challenges, and victories that these veterans have had in their lives. We are hosting a screening on Veterans Day (Nov 11, 7pm), and you are invited. It is a virtual event, and I think you will enjoy the film. It highlights area veterans to include me, my good friends Timmy Wynn, Michael Woody, Patrick J. Murphy, and Ralph Galati. Please share this... with anyone you think may be interested. Viewers can also expect a few surprises from celebrities and Philadelphia’s sports teams. Like in previous years, the Veterans Festival (hosted on our Facebook Page at 1 PM) will be an opportunity for vets and their families to gather information and resources in a fun and light-hearted, judgment-free environment. We can all be a beacon of good in this world. We all have the ability to hold others to a higher standard, but first we must make sure that what we are putting out into the world meets those standards. As we begin this week, check in with yourself. Check in with what you want reflected out into the world. Check your heart and your mind, check deep within yourself. Then, go out and spread all the love and kindness you can. The world is waiting!

A remarkable story of duty and courage. The Silver Star at just 18 Years old: (Then) Private First Class Monica Lin Brown served as a medic in Army. She deployed to Afghanistan at the age of 18 with the 4th Squadron, 73d Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. When her convoy came under attack on April 25, 2007, she braved explosions and enemy fire to treat the wounded. One vehicle hit an IED and exploded. Brown moved through small arms fire to t...he vehicle and began moving casualties away from the wreckage. She treated them only 15 meters from the burning vehicle. Enemy mortars began falling around, and ammo inside the vehicle started cooking off. Shrapnel and bullets filled the air all around from incoming enemy mortars and exploding friendly mortar rounds, 40mm grenades, and 5.56 ammo on the truck. Other soldiers arriving discovered that, miraculously, Brown was still alive. They moved her and the wounded to another area, where Brown continued her treatment and preparations for medevac. For her courage and unselfishness remaining with the wounded and protecting them amidst the most dangerous conditions, Brown was awarded the Silver Star. The ceremony came a year after the action and her promotion to Specialist.
