#FridayFacts The Tionesta State Fish Hatchery-Originally opened in 1929, the Tionesta Fish Hatchery is one of thirteen (13) hatcheries operated by the Pennsylva...nia Fish and Game Commission. Located on 387 acres of state land the hatchery specializes in raising walleye, steelhead, muskellunge, and tiger muskellunge to be stocked in Pennsylvania waterways. In the 1950s and 60s stocking trout were raised in a series of sixty-four (64) dirt / concrete raceways along Tubbs Run. In the 1970s, renovations were made which converted some of these raceways into nine (9) earthen production ponds. This allowed the hatchery the capability to culture both cold water and warm / cold water species. Shallow wells which are part of the Allegheny River aquifer allow for seasonal fluctuations in water temperature like the river itself and is an incredibly unique characteristic that sets the hatchery apart from other Pennsylvania hatcheries. The hatchery produces raises Steelhead, Walleye, Tiger Muskellunge, Pure-Breed Muskellunge, and Channel Catfish. The hatch house has tanks and egg incubation units used for rearing young fry (or juvenile). The Hatchery features an impressive 2,000-gallon, multi-level viewing aquarium filled with musky, walleye, bass, bluegill, and other fish native to local waterways.
