#OTD 1863. US Major-General Joseph Hooker addressed his army, stating our enemy must either ingloriously fly, or come out from behind his defenses and give us ...battle on our own ground, where certain destruction awaits him. Confederate artillerist Porter Alexander later commented about Hooker’s assertion, if a general may ever be justified in enumerating his poultry while the process of incubation is incomplete, this might be an occasion. Hooker’s plan to have the advantage of choosing the field of battle or forcing his enemy to retreat was very well executed up until this point. Not only did Hooker have the advantage of setting the stage, the approximately 130,000 troops under his command were comparatively well-supplied, well-fed, and had undergone a significant transformation over the winter after the disastrous Battle of Fredericksburg and the Mud March that followed. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia consisted of approximately 60,000 men present who maintained high spirits and looked forward to their next fight despite having dealt with food shortages throughout the winter. The next few days would prove costly in lives lost. The decisions that would set the course of the battle, opportunities taken and wasted, and pure chance all played a part in turning the tides of US advantage into a Confederate victory. #BattleofChancellorsville Edwin Forbes sketched this scene of US troops on the march to Chancellorsville on April 30, 1863, LOC.

These pictures show the 1918 Veterans Homecoming parade held in McConnellsburg. Two pictures show the main street, known then as Water Street, looking west. On the right draped in bunting is the Fulton House and on the left is the Fulton Democrat offices and businesses located toward what is today Second Street. One picture shows marching troops and one has a float designed for the occasion. The other picture is taken in the courthouse square. The United Methodist Church is on the right and the Washington House Hotel on the left. In the picture, the Washington House appears to be noted as the "Woolets" Hotel. Notice that both the square and Water Street were not paved at that time.
