Are you deficient in Vitamin D (aka "The Sunshine Vitamin")? Vitamin D is produced by the body when exposed to sunlight, but also is provided through a few foods (i.e. mushrooms, some fish, fish liver oils, and in fortified dairy products). If you do not get enough time in the sun and/or eat enough of these foods, you may have a deficiency. During the winter, the chance for deficiency is also higher since there is less available sunlight during those months. Vitamin D hel...ps your body absorb calcium from your diet, which is essential for strong bones. If you experience bone pain and weakness, this could be due to a Vitamin D deficiency. However, some people experience minimal symptoms, or no symptoms at all. Your regular annual blood test may not include Vitamin D levels, so be sure to ask your doctor to check this for you. The most accurate way to measure how much vitamin D is in your body is the 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood test. A level of 30 ng/ml to 100 ng/mL is considered adequate for healthy people. A level less than 30 ng/mL indicates vitamin D deficiency. Low blood levels of Vitamin D have been associated with: cardiovascular disease; cognitive impairment in older adults; severe asthma in children; cancer; depression/anxiety; gastrointestinal issues, inflammation/fibromyaligia. Research shows that vitamin D could play a role in the prevention and treatment of a number of different conditions, including type1 and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, glucose intolerance, and multiple sclerosis. If you don't eat foods rich in Vitamin D (certain fishes) and/or spend time soaking in some sun (2-4 hours per day without block), contact me about taking a vitamin D supplement. #vitamind #sunshinevitamin #vitamins #supplements #strongbones #calcium #deficiency #healthy #healthylifestyle #phillyrd #functionalhealthcenter

Time-Restricted Eating (TRE) A recent study of obese patients tested the effectiveness and safety of a time-restricted eating approach as a method to facilitate weight loss. The participants were restricted to an eating period of 8 hours each day over 12 weeks. During the remaining 16 hours of each day, the participants were only allowed to drink water or coffee/tea without sugar or milk. The participants were allowed to choose the 8 hour period which was most convenient fo...r them. According to the data gathered, the participants who adhered for at least 5 days per week had greater weight loss than this with lower adherence. In addition, 26% of the participants lost at least 5% of their body weight at 12 weeks. For the full article, go to https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article

Why Should You Care? When you go to see a doctor or a lawyer, you expect they have received formal education and earned a degree in their field, right? You should expect the same from the professionals who provide you with nutrition advice. Registered Dietitians have received formal training to assist people who suffer from nutrition-related diseases as well as symptoms that can be treated by medical nutrition therapy. There is no formal definition of a nutritionist. Any...one who gives out nutrition advice can call themselves a nutritionist. So anyone you find on the internet promoting special diets, powders, supplements, etc. can actually call themselves a nutritionist, but they most likely never received any formal training in nutrition. Even if they have completed online courses, certificates, or video-based training, they are in no way any comparison to a Registered Dietitian. Those programs are not recognized by any governing body, and they hold very limited credibility. Some nutritionists have been publicly sued for providing illegal nutrition services. The point is that a Registered Dietitian has the expertise! They are held to a rigorous professional code of ethics as well. #dietitian #registereddietitian #nutritionist #dietitianvsnutritionist See more
