Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr Day: Togetherness
After a month of resting and enjoying holidays, we at GAIT TRC started classes for the new year on Saturday. Here is a picture of the first class of the day. Rider Evelyn and horse Rusty did very well under the instructions of Ms. Vera. #gaittrc #horsetherapy #equinetherapyprogram #therapeuticriding
RJ looked happy being groomed. Many volunteers came to GAIT TRC on Saturday, the first day of 2021’s therapeutic riding classes. All the horses were groomed, even if they would not be ridden during the day. #gaittrc #horsetherapy #equinetherapy #therapeuticriding

GAIT is in the news! Knights of Columbus Council 12571 presented GAIT with a donation of $500 to support GAIT's equine assisted services for children and adults with special needs. Shout out to Grand Knight Victor Presto, Mike Schul, and Pete Ferris who came out to meet "Joey" the horse and present the check to GAIT's executive director, Martha Dubensky. Thank you so much for your support! http://www.pikedispatch.com/local.html

At GAIT, horses pair up with local heroes - veterans, first responders, LEOs - to provide equine-assisted activities and therapies that support emotional, physical, social, and/or mental health and recovery. The program is offered free to participants, but there is a cost to GAIT. With Veterans Day just a couple days away, can we count on you to make a donation in support of GAIT’s Horses 4 Heroes program?
Didn’t want to leave you hanging without getting to see Blumberg’s America's Response Monument. Below, you can see him putting the finishing touches on the full-size clay model of the horse soldier sculpture before beginning the bronze work. The sculpture can be experienced in person at NYC’s Liberty Park on the south side of Ground Zero.
Variety the Children’s Charity wants to find and impact children with disabilities that could benefit from adaptive equipment programs. Check out the info below if you know a child living with a disability (ages 3 through 21) who could use an adaptive bike, adaptive stroller, and/or communication device.
Horses are not used as often in today’s military; their wartime applications are limited mostly to reconnaissance, crowd control, or ceremony. There are exceptions, however. Below are two photos taken during Operation Enduring Freedom: Afghan and US forces on horseback in Afghanistan, and US Air Force Special Operations Command Combat Controller Bart Decker riding a horse in Afghanistan. The second image inspired Douwe Blumberg to sculpt America's Response Monument, aka The Horse Soldier statue, located at One World Trade Center, NY, NY, dedicated Nov. 11, 2011.
Folks were asking about kids sizes, so we got in touch with JEM Screen Printing and Embroidery, and we now offer kids sizes as well - YS to YXL, $40.
Through WWII, horses and humans continued to partner in battle - though not as often as some would have liked. Regarding our military’s lack of horses during campaigns in North Africa, General Patton is recorded to have said, had we possessed an American cavalry division with pack artillery in Tunisia and in Sicily, not a German would have escaped." Below is a photo of Merril’s Marauders, a US Army special operations unit that fought in Southeast Asia in WWII. The unit became famous for penetrating deep behind enemy lines, often engaging forces superior in number.
You might know that GAIT has a program - Horses 4 Heroes - that connects veterans, first responders, and law enforcement officers with horses to help them heal and recover. Horses and humans have a long history of working together and facing danger together. Below is a photo of a US soldier during WWI fitting his horse with a gas mask.
One week from today, we’ll celebrate Veterans Day. At 11 AM on November 11, 1918 - the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month - an armistice was effected between the Allies and Germany. Though the Treaty of Versailles would not be signed until seven months later, November 11th is the day generally recognized as the end of World War I. November 11th, therefore, is the day on which we in the United States of America pause to honor our veterans and celebrate Veterans Day. Below is a photo of a US Cavalryman from the World War I era.
Happy Halloween from GAIT! We hope you find a way to have safe, spooky fun this holiday - and if this is your costume, we hope you get to be the horse's head. (And if not, there's always next year!)
