This moody October weather is evoking Glen Providence Park’s 1700’s Newlywed Ghost Story! In it, two ghosts were said to pace up and down the park at night for over a century (into the early 1900’s!), along the current Shingle Mill Trail Read the full story, as recounted by Dr. Anna Broomall c. 1931: https://glenprovidencepark.org//10/02/glen-providence-gho/

Just in time for Halloween, another owl sighting! Since October 1, we’ve heard Great Horned Owls several times in the evening or early morning near the park. On this morning's misty park hike, we spotted this one nearly hidden in a tree - being harassed by crows, of course! It is not huge, so I think it’s a male and/or the juvenile that was born in the park last spring. Fingers crossed for another nest in Glen Providence this winter!

T. Chalkley Palmer was born 160 years ago today! An early naturalist to study the glen (when it was called Scroggie Valley!), he wrote about it in a detailed essay for his alma mater Haverford College when he was 29. In his essay, he describes growing up by the mouth of Scroggie Valley, visiting it frequently and studying its plants and wildlife since childhood. He went on to be the president of the Delaware County Institute of Science, and of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. His essay is a treasure to us today. Happy Birthday, T. Chalkley Palmer! Learn more about Scroggie Valley on our website: http://glenprovidencepark.org//pre-park-history-scroggie-/

This morning, our Conservation Crew worked on skimming some of the excessive duckweed and watermeal from the pond, liberating native spicebush from invasive multiflora rose, and we rescued a sign from the pond(!). Still slightly misty after the morning’s fog, it was an atmospheric October morning. https://extension.psu.edu/duckweed-and-watermeal

Join Keep Media Green's online workshop tonight at 7:00 for an updated status of the proposed reconstruction of Broomall's Dam! They'll cover the complex legal, regulatory, and political history of the Broomall’s Dam project, and explain how Delaware County Council is prioritizing protection of the County’s Glen Providence Park over dam reconstruction. Message Keep Media Green to obtain the Zoom link.

Thank you very much to Delaware County Parks & Recreation and Tom Clark Painting for working to remove graffiti from the pavilion yesterday! It is one of the original park structures, built by the WPA in 1936. <3
