On This Day in 2019, four F&M wrestling members placed at the David H. Lehman F&M Open, the most ever for the Diplomats at their home tournament. Paddy Quinlan (141) and Antonio Pelusi (285) led the way with second-place showings while Wil Gil claimed sixth at 141 and Emmett LiCastri secured fourth at 157.

Today's Throw Back Thursday takes us to 1994 when F&M wrestling 158-pounder Vic Bernardino put together a 19-2 campaign, placed first at the EIWA Tournament and advanced to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Championships in North Carolina.

On this day last year, Franklin & Marshall Women's Basketball Kenna Williams drained a game-winning free throw with one second remaining on the clock to deliver the Diplomats a 51-50 victory over Colby in Massachusetts!

For #WayBackWednesday we take a look at the 1964-65 F&M men's swimming team that went undefeated during the regular season at 12-0 and went on to capture the program's first Middle Atlantic Conference Championship. They remained the only Diplomat men's swimming team to put together a perfect regular season, until the 2019-20 team matched the feat. Co-captains Nick Hoppner and Bill Smulyan paced the way for the season. Hoppner, who earned the title Most Valuable Swimmer, set school records in the 200 Back and 200 IM with times of 2:13.0 and 2:16.6, respectively. Smulyan gained recognition in the MAC's by placing first in the 100 and 200 Fly.

Former Franklin & Marshall Men's Basketball standout Hayk Gyokchyan ’13 experienced the most powerful non-nuclear explosion in history in Beirut, Lebanon on Aug. 4. Gyokchyan and teammates from his pro basketball team, Al Riyadi quickly rose to the occasion, sponsoring disaster relief efforts. Today's #WayBackWednesday features women's Franklin & Marshall Track & Field and Cross Country Amanda Shaw Milewski '87, who became the program's first-ever All-American by securing seventh in the 5000-meter run at the 1985 NCAA Outdoor Championships! Shaw was inducted to the Franklin & Marshall College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996.

Update on College Squash National Championships: With recent COVID-19 trends continuing to raise concern, causing several College Squash Association (CSA) membe...r institutions to significantly limit or cancel their season plans, the CSA Board of Directors voted on Thursday to cancel the 2021 CSA national championship events. This cancellation includes the Women’s Team Championships, the Men’s Team Championships, and the Individual Championships for the current season. The Board’s vote followed a thorough review of the logistics and resources required to stage these events safely, as well as a comprehensive assessment of CSA teams’ operations, including their respective clearances to train, travel, host competitions, and gather in large groups. Like its member institutions and conferences, CSA has exercised caution to protect the health and wellbeing of its student-athletes, coaches, and other constituents. It is heartbreaking to deny student-athletes the championship playing experiences they would normally have had, said David Poolman, Executive Director and League Commissioner of the CSA. The current unprecedented circumstances caused by COVID-19 create too many obstacles which prevent our safe and desired execution of the championships this season. Maximizing the student-athlete experience remains a top priority for CSA. Even without the championship events, CSA still intends to support all institutions which allow their teams to train and compete in dual matches in a medically-approved manner. In consultation with US Squash and NCAA return-to-competition guidelines, CSA will publish minimum testing strategies and match protocols soon, which teams should use to create safe playing opportunities. CSA is also committed to honoring graduating seniors and recognizing the typical end-of-season academic and athletic award winners. While the cancellation is certainly disappointing, CSA is eager to engage the college squash community in new and creative ways throughout this season. Currently, the scheduled dates for the 2022 Championships are as follows, with locations still to be determined: Men’s Team Championships February 18-20, 2022 Women’s Team Championships February 25-27, 2022 Individual Championships March 4-6, 2022

Longtime Franklin & Marshall Volleyball broadcaster and fervent support of Diplomat athletics, Joe Boland, passed away late last week. Joe had been the voice of the F&M volleyball program since the athletics department began streaming home matches in 2008. A small funeral ceremony with immediate family will be held.
