George Washington High School of Philadelphia 13.11.2020

Although I never had him, I know George Yaghoobian ("Mr. Y") was much beloved by all the people whose life he touched in his career. He will be missed.

Alumni Meeting Minutes May 20, 2019 The Alumni meeting was held in room 157 at GWHS at 3:00 p.m. Our meeting began at 3:20 p.m. In attendance were: Marie... McCann '65, Daria Braddock '69, Allen Siegel '65, Lynne Kramer '69, Joy Cohen '68, Marty Manson '65. Donna Bader '65, Sharon Cohen '68, Sandy Kern '69, Mike Zlotnick '82 Welcome: We went around the table and introduced ourselves. It was wonderful to see and meet some new alumni faces who joined our meeting!!! Bricks: At this point we can refer to the "bricks" as tiles. Sue Thompson, Shawn Poole and Caitlyn Boyle have approved the installation of the tiles on the grey marble on the auditorium side. This will be a better color background to display the tiles. The building engineer, Tony, will work with us to install the tiles. Ed will locate a union worker willing to do the work for us. Thank you, Ed! Senior Day: Tuesday May 28, 9:30 a.m. The alumni that are available are asked to help distribute a soft pretzel, an apple and water to the students after they sign up on the computers and give us their email address. This way we keep our data base growing. Sandy will order food through chef Beck. She has also discussed the timing with Michele Socki. Web Site/Updating our GWHS information: Mike suggested having the students give us their Twitter address. He said we have to be "out there" more. We need more discussion - we know that Twitter is very popular with high school students, Instagram too! However, it is not something we are all comfortable with. If we are to continue to grow and gain younger members, we must add more 21st century tools. To do this we also will need younger alumni that commit to updating this information, and are active in the Alumni Association. There are 7 administrators capable of adding information to our web site. Marie will make Mike an administrator and that will give Mike ability to add information to our web site. Mike also suggested that we might want to pay someone to really design a web site that would be a real domain. Thank you, Mike, for many great ideas! Marie said we get lots of "likes" on Face Book". There are two FB pages one is ours and one is not ours and the one that is not ours costs money to "join"- that is a phony GWHS web site. our address is George Washington High School Alumni Association Philadelphia Pa. We need a disclaimer on our web site saying that there is NO COST. Awards Night: Wednesday May 29 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. A motion was made by Marty and seconded by Sandy, to give the students $100 per essay. Lynne read very compelling essays written by the students to get an award. We really wish we had enough money to pay the total cost for college for many students. Alumni - will give service and community awards of $100. to 6 students Class of 1968 - will choose one student from 6 candidates and give a check for $300. Class of 1965 - Legacy Award - Michele Socki gave us the name of a very deserving student for a $500. award Carol Lebowitz, Sharon Cohen, Lynne Kramer and Sandy Kern will present the checks to the students. Marty will take pictures for the web site. All are welcome to attend. News from GWHS graduates: Sharon Cohen ' 68 wrote a book " Touch A Life" Rhonda Fink-Whitman - wrote a book "94 Maidens" Shareef Williams - NFL picked by the Eagles Charity: A lot of our graduates have had fund raisers, or have some left-over money from their reunions. Many have been very generous towards their own classmates, etc. At GWHS about 83% of the students live in poverty. The school has set up room 157 for clothing donations for baby - to grown up clothes. All donations welcome. Also, GWHS has a food pantry which also is accepting donations. Any help would be very much appreciated! Mike said he would bring this up to his class - 1982. Next Meeting- June 17- 7:00 p.m. Wine and Cheese - all welcome! At the home of Lynda Myers We are hoping for a good turnout - please join us and bring at least 1 classmate! Any additions or corrections please contact me at [email protected] Respectfully submitted, Marty Manson '65 recording secretary. Correction to the minutes are as follows GWHS Alumni Assoc. 2:00 PM (7 hours ago) to Marie, bcc: me There is a correction to the minutes from our May, 2019 meeting. Ray Fitch '65 Sent this note. Mike Z. please correct our Facebook page. Thank you Ray and Mike Alumni----yes, it was GW All Public football player Shareef Miller who went to Penn St and now has been drafted by the Phila Eagles. He has attended OTAs(Optional Team Activities) and has done well according to articles in the newspapers. Now preparing for Rookie camp with the Eagles...Shareef is a Defensive End and hoping to make the team. The Northeast Times has an article or two about Miller. There was another GW player in Eagles camp, Claudy Mathieu GW All Pub 2010, but I have not heard or seen anything about him there? He too is a Defensive End. Not sure if he is still working out with Eagles Shocking news, to me, is the report in the minutes that 83% of GW students live in POVERTY...hard to believe. Make it a great weekend Ray Fitch June 11,2019

Some exciting news....share this to your alum friends http://media.philly.com/images/600*450/0317-2.jpg The Alumni Association has received an offer to repaint ...and revitalize Mickey Young Stadium for next season. The Philadelphia Painters Union has generously offered to make our dream project a reality. Now, with our Alumni Support, we can find more donors to refurbish the track, make improvements to the entire area. Anyone with building trade contacts for other work, please contact us. Regaining the school’s legacy is well under way with the leadership of Sue Thompson and a revitalized faculty and student body. Mayor Kenney has personally stepped in to help further the process too. We look forward to more Alums standing up to join us with the momentum we have started. Give back to your high school, it is a worthwhile investment.
