You probably spend a lot of your time these days with your kids. You are educating, playing, feeding (serious question: how many snacks do they need on an average day? ) entertaining (see photo above) and filling up their metaphorical buckets to the tippy top. If you are like me, you pour time, energy and patience into their little bodies with hopes that what you are doing makes them conscious and contributing citizens of the world. But guess what, you cannot spend ev...eryday pouring for others without refilling your own cup. In this season of gratitude and giving, I’m wondering about YOU mama. How are you giving back to yourself? Studies show those that are happiest and healthiest have an active self-care practice. When you have the weight of the world on your back (or a 45 pound 6 year old) look to your wellness toolbox for relief. Here are my top 5 favorite ways to refill my empty cup: Daily movement: everyday in anyway. Playing with the kids counts, walking counts, cardio counts, HIIT workouts count. Optimized nutrition: carbs, lean proteins, healthy fats and fiber with every meal Targeted supplementation: filling in nutrient gaps everyday. Mindful living: showing kindness, empathy, compassion and gratitude to everything and everyone. Self-care: detox baths, meditation, exercise. Sorry babe, we’ve been taking cover he said. And all the things on my mindthe unpacked moving boxes, the kids yelling in the background, the laundry piling up next to me- all of it melted away in an instant. When I heard those words, time stopped. My senses grew hyper focused on him- I could see his eyes, I could feel the tension in his body, ready to reach for his helmet and body armor. The thing about him is that he always keeps his cool- but in that moment, I... could feel the uncertainty through the pixelated video feed. It was then I heard the announcement Attention on the compound incomingduck and cover And immediately, I was overcome. It takes a special person to stand up and say send me- to be both selfless and fearless. What I learned in those uncomfortable moments is this: he is willing to lay down his life for me, his wife. But also for you, a complete stranger. In fact, for all of us. He doesn’t worry about the color of your skin, your gender, or whether you vote left or right. He loves this country and its 244 years of good and bad. And he is willing to defend her flag with his life. Today marks 145 days since we’ve held him close and slept in peace. We are not alone. The 165,000 active-duty military personnel permanently assigned outside the continental United States are also working straight through weekends and holidays with hearts aching for home. They too are sacrificing home cooked meals and a quiet nights rest. Since that eye opening day, I’ve tried to live a life worthy of his selfless example. It’s easy to forget our Veterans. And I tell this story today with hope that you will remember them. Perhaps on your worst day, think of the Army solider who is wearing 75 lbs of body armor in 115 degree heat, or the Naval officer whose feet won’t touch shore for another 6 months. My gratitude is endless. In fact, gratitude is too small a word. On this Veteran’s Day, remember those who put the greater good above self, who, when everyone else stayed home, travelled across the world to just serve. #justserve See more
