Pity the native Common Blue Violet (Viola sororia) that is all-too-often dismissed as a "lawn weed." Its small flowers are lovely--and even edible--making a nic...e salad garnish. It grows in sun or shade, is not fussy about soil, and functions as an excellent three-season ground cover. It's also the larval host plant for the Great Spangled Fritillary, Variegated Fritillary, and Falcate Orangetip Butterflies. Shown are both the typical Common Blue Violet as well as the "Confederate Violet" (Viola sororia f. priceana) that has white petals with purple veins. What's not to love? See more

This time of year in the propagation house, we sow locally collected native tree and shrub seed. Pictured here is Catalpa, a beautiful fast-growing native tree that can reach 75'+. Native trees and shrubs propagated from local, straight species are most beneficial for native pollinators. Keep watching our page - we will be opening soon ! #34yearsinbusiness
It's a cold, snowy Valentine's Day here in York County. Have the birds eaten your Winterberries yet? If not, the berries haven't reached their peak ripeness for the birds to find them palatable yet. The ripening process happens during freezing and thawing, and varies among Winterberry selections.
