Did you know that today is National Saxophone Day? It arrives each November 6, and as a result, today is the perfect day to celebrate a saxophone player with lo...cal connections. Shown here is renowned saxophone player Grover Washington, Jr., who had his studio behind storefronts on the east side of the 8600 block of Germantown Avenue. His studio was demolished in late 2017. This photo of Washington was published in a 1994 issue of the Chestnut Hill Local, and included the following caption: Come out and meet Grover Washington, Jr. at Settlement Music School, 6128 Germantown Avenue, on Saturday, February 25. From 1 to 2 PM he will join John Blake in the School's lobby to greet the community and sign autographs. In addition, contributors to School's Parents Campaign receive autographed promotional items. This is just the start of a day filled with fun and music that's guaranteed to chase away winter blues, while it benefits the School's financial and scholarship aid program. For information on how you can be part of the excitement, call Settlement Music School at 438-0200. #SaxophoneDay For more information on the demolition of Washington’s studio, visit https://www.chestnuthilllocal.com//evergreen-court-buildin

This dreamy view is of an out-of-the-way place in the Wissahickon, as it appeared in around 1900. The lane visible towards the center of this photograph is the ...old Township Line Road (later renamed Wissahickon Avenue) as it appeared north of Allen’s Lane. In the view, Allen’s Lane would be in the far distance, out of view behind the crest of the hill, with Glen Fern/ the Livezey House located far out of view, down in the valley to the right. Devil’s Pool and the Cresheim Valley would be behind the photographer. If this view relaxes you, it has served its purpose as today is National Stress Awareness Day. It’s a great day to relieve some stress by taking a walk to some long-forgotten spot, be it in the Wissahickon Valley or beyond. #StressAwarenessDay For more information about National Stress Awareness Day, visit https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-stress-awareness-/

Like today, there were many times in America’s past when the nation was divided. In November 1860 Anne Sophia Penn Chew (1805-1896) wrote to her sister, Eliza C...hew Mason (1798-1874) sharing her concerns about the growing rift between the North and South, specifically Virginia’s threat to secede from the Union and her brother-in-law’s Virginia Senator James Murray Masonpolitical skills: ‘What is Mason good for if he can’t put an end to the disturbance. Tell him from me that I don’t think much of his talents if he don’t put them to some good use.’ #vote2020 See more

This day announces the arrival of National Broadcast Traffic Professional’s Day. Also sometimes referred to as National Traffic Directors Day, it celebrates t...he work of our broadcast radio and TV personnel, and it is normally held each year on November 2 (with exceptions) to celebrate the first radio broadcast which occurred in Pittsburgh out of station KDKA, on November 2, 1920, exactly 100 years ago. Shown here is a setup by radio station Power 99FM (WUSL), at the Germantown Lions Club’s rib cook-off, held in the parking lot of the Cedarbrook Mall on August 24, 1996. #TrafficProfessionalsDay For more information about Traffic Professional’s Day/ Traffic Director’s Day, visit https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-traffic-directors/ The photograph shown here and thousands of others are available online at https://germantown.pastperfectonline.com/ . It’s a great way to spend some time reliving Germantown memories at home.
