Doug Hoffman 60-lap Tribute next race in Mahoning Valley Speedway Hall of Fame Series this Saturday night (7-28-20) This coming Saturday, August 1 Mahoning Vall...ey Speedway will present the third installment of the 2020 Mahoning Valley Speedway Hall of Fames Series with the Doug Hoffman 60-lap Tribute. While Hoffman rose to become one of the all-time greats in dirt Modified racing, his roots are imbedded within the chronicles of eastern Pennsylvania short track asphalt racing starting at Dorney Park Speedway then Evergreen Raceway and eventually as promoter of Mahoning Valley Speedway. In 2019 Doug was inducted into the Dorney Park Speedway/Mahoning Valley Speedway Hall of Fame and it was at that ceremony that younger brother, Keith Hoffman, now promoter of Mahoning Valley, came up with the idea of the Hall of Fame Series of races which honors former greats of those two tracks. The Series thus far has been nothing short of a success story with great crowds and excellent car counts. It’s cool that we can pay tribute to drivers who are not racing anymore or may have passed away but there’s great memories with all of them, said Keith. In race #1, the John Peepers Yerger 77-lap Tribute, one of the biggest crowds in track history attended and watched first time Mahoning starter Jimmy Blewett score the victory. In the most recent event, the George Wambold 81-lap tribute, it was again an impressive turnout out of cars and fans with Matt Hirschman pulling off the Modified victory. This is exciting having a Hall of Fame Series race honoring Doug. I think this Series that I started is just as exciting as the Series’ that he started at Mahoning, said Keith. I’m certain this race will attract a lot of fans because they still like to support anything that’s in memory of him and he had so many fans because he was so good at what he did on the race track. It was Saturday night, August 13, 1977 at Dorney Park when Doug would win his career first race, driving a Late Model with the No. 60. That car number would become the one most affiliated with his career. Two years later Doug won the first of his 22 track and series championships. By the time his driving career ended in 2007 Doug had amassed 482 career wins. But even though he won on some of the biggest stages in short track racing, he never forgot his humble beginnings. Dorney Park taught Doug how to win and it also taught him how to win a championship. So even though his career wasn’t that long there because he knew for him to go any further he would have to keep moving on, but the years that he did race there he learned how to be a champion and he learned how to be a winner, said Keith. Once you learn those two things in racing then the sky’s the limit. I can tell you how much Dorney Park meant to him. He won a lot of trophies and many of them just went to the wayside but Dorney Park is one that he had on his mantle at his house since 1979. While still driving Doug was approached in joining as partner on promoting Mahoning Valley Speedway in the early 1990s and he was all in. Mahoning, after all, was been an extension of Dorney Park. When the Park closed in 1986 Mahoning sprang back into action the following year and that same crowd moved from Allentown to Lehighton for their asphalt racing fix. In 2005 Doug took sole control of the track and ran the show there until 2011. Now younger brother Keith is promoter for owners Jack and Rebecca Carlino and has been running the facility in the manner by which Doug would be proud. Doug’s record on the race track speaks for itself. When we raced together it was on and we probably didn’t talk the next day at the dinner table, noted Keith. I learned a lot from him. His promoting skills where almost as good as his driving skills. Not knowing at first how to promote I feel his effort on what he believed was the way to run a race track as a business and survive is why he succeeded, he continued. I think most people don’t realize what it takes to run a race track. Everyone seems to have a lot of ideas until they’re in that situation and its way harder because all the things you thought you were going to do changes as things come upon you throughout the night. The Hall of Fames Series reflects on the same type high profile promotions that Doug did at Mahoning. First with the Mahoning Valley Speedway Modified 500 Series, Survivor Series and then the popular Poker Series. I’m really proud of what the Hall of Fame Series has been all about and coming up with this Series for Mahoning has been awesome, offered Keith. I think the drivers are into it, the fans are into it and no question it’s been very successful to this point more than I thought it would be. They’re enjoying it for sure and there’s nothing cooler than being a driver and winning in front of a big crowd and that’s what all the divisions are getting. As a driver I can tell you that’s an awesome experience, he went on the say. And what’s great is the Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks are just as big a part of this Series as the Modifieds are. You notice they all get the big checks, they all get the champagne and I know they’re just as ecstatic to win as the Modified guys. Saturday night’s race for the Modifieds will pay $2500-to-win and there will be an increase in pay for positions two through six. 10th spot pays $500. The Hobby Stock winner is also going to see and increase at the payout window.
