20 years ago today, Noam Chomsky and the late Ed Herman celebrated the 25th Anniversary of House of Our Own Books with an event at the University of Pennsylvania (original event flyer & article from The Daily Pennsylvanian below). They spoke strongly in support of our store, of all independent bookstores, and of progressive thinking and action across the country and around the world. We appreciated their sentiments in 1997 and their stirring words are just as inspiring today! #HoOOBooksHistory #NoamChomsky #IndependentBookstores #Penn #UPenn #Bookstores #WestPhilly #UniversityCity #IndependentBookstore #Philadelphia #Philly
Edward S. Herman, 1925 - 2017 Ed Herman, our long-time friend and frequent customer, passed away on this past Saturday, November 11. Ed was retired from teaching at the University of Pennsylvania, where he had been Professor of Finance at The Wharton School. He continued to write regularly for Z Magazine and other progressive publications. Ed was the author or co-author of many books, including Manufacturing Consent with Noam Chomsky, which introduced the propaganda model of... media criticism. Over the years, Ed came to House of Our Own Books to give talks on four of his books (Manufacturing Consent, The Terrorism Industry, The Triumph of the Market, and The Myth of the Liberal Media) - events that drew large crowds and created lively discussions. At an event celebrating our store's 25th anniversary, Ed offered impassioned support for independent bookstores. We celebrate his life and work and we will miss his energy, warmth and persistence in seeking the truth. Edit: The Washington Post's obituary for Ed is here: https://www.washingtonpost.com//7cab93ca-cade-11e7-aa96-54
20 years ago this month, "Going Home to a Used Bookstore" appeared in the The Daily Pennsylvanian, written by then-freshman Eva Katz. It's one of our favorite stories from the #HoOOBooks community! See excerpts and the full article in the attached screenshots. Do you have a story or good memories of House of Our Own Books? Please share it with us! #HoOOBooksHistory ... #IndependentBookstores #Penn #UPenn #Bookstores #WestPhilly #UniversityCity #IndependentBookstore

46 years ago, in October, 1971, we announced to the University of Pennsylvania campus our hopes for launching House of Our Our Books on Spruce Street by the end of the year! Check out this "before view" photo, when the 3900 block of Spruce St. did not yet have an independent bookstore. [looking east toward Center City, from the intersection at 40th St.]... Thanks to our friends at University of Pennsylvania Archives for their great collection of historical photos like this one!
