Jewish Association on Aging 23.05.2021

We just announced that we are having our annual Art of Aging benefit on June 24 at Heinz Field Gold Parking Lot 1. It's a drive-in making it easy to stay safely distanced but still able to have some fun outside with all our friends. Broadway's Mandy Gonzalez will be performing live, virtually, on a big screen set up in the giant lot. We are seeking sponsors now with single tickets going on sale May 13. Mark your calendar! Today and tomorrow, we commemorate Israel's Independence and remember the sacrifices made for the Holy Land. What better way to express our thoughts than through the words of Rabbi Small.

It's official. Pearl Averbach has moved from Weinberg Village to be the executive director at Weinberg Terrace and Nicole Lynn Morgan is now running the show at Weinberg Village. Here are some pix of the residents at the Village wishing Pearl a fond farewell and the best of luck with new job. Congratulations to both Pearl and Nicole!

Who doesn't love a root beer float?! The ladies of the Arbor at Weinberg Village got to enjoy theirs in the courtyard last week. Yummy!

Today, the Jewish Association on Aging announced a tentative decision to close our Charles Morris Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. This announcement only applies to the operations of Charles Morris, as all other JAA residential and community services will remain fully operational. This is an extremely difficult direction for us to consider, and one that our board and leadership do not take lightly.... We all care deeply about the residents and families we serve. We share the pain of everyone impacted at Charles Morris and are heartbroken by its necessity. If finalized, the closure date would be January 12, 2021. We are taking steps now to prepare everyone for what might come next. Over the coming weeks, we will work with individual Charles Morris residents and their families to evaluate options that are best based on their needs. We will also be working to determine which of our employees would be impacted. The last few years have been very difficult for nursing homes, and COVID-19 has exacerbated an already challenging situation. Our utmost concern has been, and always will be, to provide quality care for our community. We are making this tentative decision because we believe it will allow us to continue to provide high-quality care to the thousands of older adults whose lives we enhance through our broad continuum of senior care services. Many thanks to everyone who has supported our mission to serve our community, and who will hopefully continue to support us as we work through this difficult situation.

Living at The New Riverview apartments means being flexible (exercise classes) and engaged (Men's Club on Zoom). With appropriate social distancing, of course.

This week, we will mark two years since the horrifying, anti-Semitic attack on Congregation Dor Hadash, New Light Congregation and Tree of Life Congregation. We will never forget the eleven people we lost. So many people are still healing. For those who need support through this difficult time, please seek help through the 10.27 Healing Partnership and Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh beneficiary agency, Jewish Family and Community Services of Pittsburgh.

What a message of hope to share from The Pittsburgh Foundation! It says it all, with words from our dear friend, Mister Rogers. Look for the helpers, look to JAA staff and residents, featured in this video among the many who make Pittsburgh so special. Thank you Joshua Franzos for creating this beautiful piece.

Congratulations to Rickie Dell from our Sivitz Hospice team who is the 2020 Direct Care Worker of the Year Award Winner. Given by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and the PA Homecare Association, the award recognizes Rickie among all direct care workers from across the state. Rickie has been with JAA for 14 years, the last three in hospice care where she never ceases to amaze. Going above and beyond is her mantra. Thank you, Rickie and Patty Lippert Rudolchick, also recognized by PHA, for your hard work and dedication to JAA and our hospice families.
