Here’s a feature of a set of images I did of my daughter’s graduating 8th grade class. I did artistic images of each student through the glass window as a measure of safety because of the pandemic, but also because it makes for beautiful photos. Please have a look! https://phillywaldorf.com/class-of-2020-portraiture-captur/

I was experimenting with Rollie 25 speed film (based on an antiquated film type with a super fine grain). The light is classic chiaroscuro lighting. I often feel like photographers too often hide the edges of the shadows, neglecting the beautiful edge of the shadow, placed on a a highlight. (For example, putting the dark side of the foot against the bright highlights of her arm, brings emphasis to the edge of the shadow.) I was trying to capture both both the rawness and fragility of the baby in the protective embrace of mother’s arms, capturing both the beauty and the vulnerability of breastfeeding a fresh newborn. #hasselblad #120film #slowfilm #thedarkroomlab #thedarkroom #silvergelatin #breastfeeding #breastfeedingmom #breastfeedingphotography #mothersmilk #newborn #freshbaby #sweetbabygirl #stopcensoringmotherhood

Happy Birthday to my brilliant and beautiful daughter. She’s 22 today and thousands of miles away, currently in her last year at Trinity Dublin. She’s a bright and shining light in my life and miss having her close. I couldn’t be more proud of the woman she’s become, with integrity, grace and a presence that lifts my soul. Our children make our lives whole, and having her so far away makes me feel like I’m missing a piece of myself. Happy Birthday Emma! We miss you! I can’t wait until to see you! (This is a type 55 Polaroid taken several years ago in Portland OR. The solarization happens when a little light is allowed on to the negative after the development process has already started. I happen to have a Polaroid holder that doesn’t close all the way, giving this effect.)
