"In the early 1800s, western Pennsylvania was frontier territory, wild and untamed. Abram Stutzman, a local circuit-riding Dunkard minister who had already built four log cabins in and around what is now Johnstown, built a fifth one along the wagon trail... The log cabin remains today, along with the pond, on the property of what is now known as the Community Arts Center of Cambria County on Menoher Boulevard." "Anyone interested in the mob and its tentacles in small American cities and communities will learn a great deal... A Johnstown native and well-regarded author, Russell Shorto pulls back the veil on organized crime in the area. He’s in a nearly unique position to do so his grandfather, also named Russell Shorto, was number two in the mob hierarchy in Johnstown." Read our latest book review of "Smalltime" by Russell Shorto.

Distinctive and unobtrusive those words could well describe the independent, neighborhood butcher and grocery store, Valko’s AG Store, in South Fork. Distinctive in its customer service, but unobtrusive in its physical presence, Valko’s grocery prides itself in old-fashioned values: the personal touch, the interests of its customers and neighborly connections. There used to be more stores like ours, five or six of them in the area Acme, Burkey’s, A&P all belonging to a...n organization called Associated Grocers, reminisces Bill Valko, the store’s owner. But modernization and economies of scale paved the way for big-box food supply chains. Unable to compete with the big boys, most of these independent stores have since gone out of business, he laments, and his shop is probably one of the last of its kind.

Today marks the 85th anniversary of the Johnstown flood of 1936. "On March 17, 1936, Johnstown was once again flooded when water from melting snow and several days of relentless rain rose to more than 14 feet in some areas. It is estimated that 25 people died, nearly 3,000 structures were damaged and 77 destroyed. Property damages were set at $41 million." "To pass the time during the many months of isolation due to COVID-19, leisurely hobbies that were once viewed as old fashioned are seeing new life. Just take a minute to scroll on social media and you’ll see pictures of a needlepoint project or a completed puzzle with proud exclamations of: So I did a thing! This past year has ignited a passion for restful fun; and while locked away, many have turned to board games. They dragged out the vintage games of their youth or lear...ned new ones to share with family and friends." "The novel starts with a bang and doesn't let up." 40 Patchtown is set in and around the Windber area. Its inspiration came from the 1922 coal strike and from stories relayed to the author by his grandfather. Although it bears little resemblance to the borough today, locals will readily identify locations and structures that are still standing. Read the full review in Johnstown Magazine
