Our team put this together recently to address laryngectomy and tracheostomy care in general and during COVID. We think these patients are at higher risk for COVID and will likely come into providers who are not familiar with Laryngectomy. This is just a short presentation to familiarize providers.

Hi Everyone: We have had a few of our patients reach out for advice: For patients with a laryngectomy or tracheostomy, we are recommending extra caution: 1) be sure to observe social distancing practices and consider more significant shelter in place measures... 2) use an HME device and consider a stoma cover. These aren’t designed for covid but could be helpful to decrease your droplet exposure. 3) if you feel like you maybe developing some of the respiratory symptoms or other symptoms of COVID, contact a healthcare provider early. Many providers including our office are offering Telehealth visits to help you without requiring you to come to the office. 4) keep yourself updated with recommendations and guidance from reliable sources. We just got the 2019 version of the CHANCE t-shirt. It looks great and is really comfortable. We are going to give one to anyone who makes a $100 or greater donation to CHANCE as a fundraiser to help support our next trip in October. 100% of the proceeds go directly to patient care. FYI: $100 pays for all of the surgical and hospital care for a patient to undergo a thyroidectomy or similar surgery. $500 pays for a full removal and reconstruction of a jaw tumor...the same procedure and care would cost over $50,000 in the US. If you are interested in donating and getting a t-shirt while our supply lasts visit: https://giving.jefferson.edu/giving-g/community/chance.html If you donate, mention: 1) CHANCE t-shirt, 2) your name, 2) mailing address, and 4) shirt size in the comments. Thanks!

We did our 34th jaw reconstruction free flap surgery on our most current trip! Our Jefferson and University of Miami teams wrapped up a successful week of surgeries and education with our Haitian colleagues. Thanks to the patients who let us care for them, St Luke’s Hospital for hosting, and The University of Haiti team for collaborating! Special thanks to our nursing and tech staff who volunteer their time to make the trip possible: Jennifer Holzworth, Trish Ryan, Lindsay Zwierlein, Tiara Taylor-Wilson, Rica Santillan, Yanelis delPino.

Thanks to another great crew for putting together an ambitious trip. A lot of challenging cases to help those in need and work alongside our Haitian colleagues. Great job Trish Ryan, Deb Heim, Elizabeth Vargas, and Karen Weiner, getting us there with all equipment and keeping working all day.
