This #WhiskerWednesday, we wanted to share some happy news! Lovey, who was rescued by our Humane Law Enforcement team in June and spent some time recovering in ...our hospital, found her #purrfect match. Kudos to Lovey's foster mom, Katy, who not only helped Lovey transition from being fearful to being the love that she is, but to matching Lovey with her adoptive mom. Lovey left this week for her forever home - and here they are. Happy tails, Lovey
Besides black bears, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are the only large mammals still common on the East Coast. Their success is directly related to ...human expansion. Humans exterminated eastern cougars and wolves, leaving local deer to breed freely. And when people fell forests to make farms and roads, this only encourages more deer, which prefer grasses, crops, and tender young trees to deep woods. But when deer overwhelm an area, they can browse so heavily that new trees can’t grow, and loss of quality food malnourishes the deer. Do you see white-tailed deer in your neighborhood? Today’s Exhibit of the Day features one of the longest animals: The lion’s mane jellyfish. Its trailing mane of more than 800 stinging tentacles can grow more... than 100 feet (30 meters) long! In fact, the longest of these jellieswhich inhabit the Arctic Oceanare longer than the longest known blue whale. The tentacles are covered in cells with venom that stun prey, including other jellyfish, small crustaceans, and zooplankton. Many organisms depend on the lion’s mane, too: Some critters seek shelter under its umbrella while cleaning it of arthropods in return. Juvenile walleye pollock hide from danger in its tentacles!
