In this tribute to Victoria Mallory, Ellen March (returned to Lakewood to do Funny Girl in 1972) makes reference to Lakewood at around 10:45. Theatre wasn't actually in Tamaqua, but was in Barnesville, PA, just a few miles away. Thought it was interesting, https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KFcmPQhPfMI
KISMET in 1971. Didn't see it but acquired a program that I thought may be interesting.
Two pics taken several years after the theatre closed. Final two summer seasons (1977 and 1978) it was the "Lakewood Country Playhouse." Some of the sign still remained. I remember MANY years ago reading that the theatre had been ransacked (even though no longer in use) as the interior shot shows.
FUNNY GIRL was a big hit of the 1972 season. Might be a difficult show to produce these days, but, back then it was still riding high off the success of the 1968 movie version, and the audiences loved it! Ellen Remm (Ellen March) returned as a guest artist to portray Fannie Brice. She had previously performed at Lakewood during the 1967 season. Later in the 70's she played Frenchie in the original Broadway production of GREASE for several years. The program lists it as playing August 1-5, but it actually played July 25-29. MY FAIR LADY played August 1-5.
Victoria Mallory sadly passed away in 2014. At an early age (as Vicki Morales) she performed at Lakewood in 1967 as Maria in WEST SIDE STORY, Julie in CAROUSEL, and Laury in OKLAHOMA!. She is best known for her portrayal of Anne in the original Broadway cast of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC in 1973 Her daughter Ramona Mallory Lambert recently played the same role of Anne in the Broadway revival of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC in 2009.
From the 1974 Season.
The way it was!
Beverly Braniff was going to be MAME in 1970, but was injured during a final dress rehearsal, and was replaced by Debbie Weems, who learned the role of MAME in ONE day before opening night!
Just found this! At least some people are remembering this place, too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGE027X2q6E
