We just want to say THANK YOU to all of our clients and supporters who contributed to our Holiday Food Drive this past December. Because of you we were able to donate 279 pounds of food to the @pghfoodbank. This amount will provide 232 meals to those in need this winter. NUTRITION TIP OF THE WEEK! . Transform your sleep: The scientific way to energize your body, sharpen your mind, and stop hitting snooze. . It’s 7 a.m., and you’re already disgusted with yourself. You planned to go for an early run, but when your alarm sounded, you hit snooze. Then you hit it again. After the third time, your partner told you to shut that damn thing off!... . Now here you are: About to embark on yet another overscheduled day, and you’ve blown your one chance for some exercise. . And you’re left wondering: . Why can’t I get motivated to work out in the morning? . I can tell you with confidence: Repeatedly hitting the snooze button has nothing to do with motivation. The real problem: You’re just not getting enough sleep. . How to sleep better: Your 14-day plan . Choose what time you’re going to get up. Strive for consistency here, even on the weekends. . A few pointers: You might find it easier to get up if you sleep with the blinds openallowing natural light to stimulate Process C (your circadian rhythm). Get activated early in the day, by making your favorite coffee, taking a shower, walking the dog, or checking social media. If you plan to shift your morning routine by more than an hour, do it in 30-minute increments, every three to four days. . As you shift your wake time, shift your bedtime. There’ll be a delay of a day or so, but they should go together. Otherwise, you’ll be sleep deprived. . Lower your stress levels near bedtime. (No news or work email!) . Line up support from family. Consider what you can do to ensure you can easily stick to your plan six days out of seven, and remember the three reasons why improving your sleep matters to you. . Try the plan for two weeks, and re-assess. Do you fall asleep easily, drifting off within 20 minutes or so? Have your middle of the night awakenings become a rare occurrence? Can you get out of bed without smashing the snooze button countless times? Do you feel more rested and energetic? . If you answered yes to all those questions, great job. You’ve just figured out a sleep routine that works for you! See more

NUTRITION TIP OF THE WEEK! . Sweet potatoes vs. potatoes: Which are really healthier? . Sweet potatoes vs. potatoes: A nutritional debate fueled by misinformation, baseless ‘superfood’ obsessions, and carbohydrate phobias. Here’s how these tubers compare and why both deserve a place in your diet.... . A few years back, some nutrition enthusiasts decided to figure out whether white or sweet potatoes were healthier. One group compared the glycemic index and load of sweet potatoes vs. potatoes. They suggested that since white potatoes tend to be higher, they should be avoided. . Another group suggested that sweet potatoes are a vitamin A ‘superfood’, putting them way ahead of their white potato competitors. . And, of course, the carbophobes had their own take: All potatoes should be avoided because they’re too high in carbs and all those carbs will mess with your insulin regulation and cause fat gain. . Nonsense, all of it. Both white and sweet potatoes, when eaten as part of a balanced and intentional diet, provide a fantastic array of nutrients while contributing to the satiety and deliciousness of any meal. . So you’ve seen Forge U listed on our schedule and wondered, what is that? Well, Forge U is exactly what it says it is - Forge Yourself. It is a class where the coach works as a member of your team through a series of strength training supersets. Just like a group lift, everyone pushes each other to attain the best version of themselves. Everyone is on the same playing field! Each class focuses on a different area of the body. The first two weeks of September are Lower Body... Push (Squats/Lunges/Etc) on Tuesdays, while Saturdays focus on Upper Body Pull (Rows/Etc). The last two weeks are Lower Body Pull (Deadlifts/Hip Thrusts/Etc) on Tuesday and Upper Body Push (Shoulder Press/Bench Press/Etc) on Saturday. Are you ready to Forge yourself? Traveling for work? Going on vacation? Running your kids from soccer game to violin practice? Being away from home is one of the most common nutrition challenges I hear about. The ideal: You sit at the dining table and calmly, slowly, peacefully enjoy your food.... What really happens: You lose track of time while finishing up one last work email, forget to eat, and then rush out the door to pick your son up from school so you can take him to rugby and then drive your daughter home after swim practice. Somewhere in between: A half-eaten KIND bar, a Granny Smith apple, and some cashews. The truth is, life isn’t ideal for anyone. But you still have to eat. And you’re allowed to prioritize healthy eating even if you’re extremely busy. Here are some strategies for eating well even when you’re busy. 1. Eat a healthy meal (Healthy Hive 5) 2. Pack a snack or several 3. Homemade protein bars 4. Easy bring-with-you salad 5. Picnic basket or cooler 6. Aim for better not perfect 7. Get creative 8. NUTRITION TIP OF THE WEEK IS BACK! . Bacteria in our food: good or bad?! . Let me introduce you to Kombucha. ... . Kombucha is produced by the fermentation of tea and sugar along with bacteria and yeasts forming a tea fungus. While green tea can be used, black tea and white sugar seem to work best. . Kombucha is a living, growing organism and is actually quite similar to cultures that activate yogurt and transform cabbage into sauerkraut. . There is a lot of evidence that consuming bacterially fermented foods or even just straight-up friendly bacteria, as in the case of a probiotic supplement is good for us. . You probably are already eating fermented foods in your diet, even without realizing it! Some fermented foods are heat-treated or made to be shelf-stable and, therefore, do not contain live bacteria. Live bacteria are where benefits from fermented foods are said to be from. Common foods with live bacteria in them include yogurt, kefir (fermented milk drink), tempeh (fermented soy), raw sauerkraut (fermented cabbage), Kombucha (fermented, sweetened, carbonated tea), raw kimchi (Korean fermented vegetables with different seasonings), and raw apple cider vinegar. . What does it REALLY take to get fit? Like, if you eat a fancy, vegan, wild rice bowl, you’ve passed the test But if you eat a couple slices of pizza with a beer on a Friday, you’ve failed. ... Or, if you work out 5x a week, you’ve passed But if you fit in some stretches at the playground (because your kids are animals in the mornings), you’ve failed. Lots of people feel this way about nutrition and exercise: that if you’re not doing it perfectly, you’re a failure who can’t do anything right and should just give up. If you’ve found yourself ever thinking this way, we’ve got some great news for you. There is no perfect person (No matter how awesome you are). Yet when many of us contemplate a health plan, weight loss program, or other lifestyle change, we start with the expectation that we need to be perfect. But how could you be? You have stress, and feelings, and previous habits, and maybe a job or school or kids or a pet, and days when you feel like crap. Plus, Netflix. If perfection is required, then most of us might as well not even bother. Habits are daily health practicessuch as eating lean protein at each meal or consuming 5 servings of fruits and vegetablesthat we give them every two weeks.
