NJ Courts almost completely up and running by telephone and video. A lot of people have been asking me about this. This is a link to the Notice to the Bar with details about what is and isn't happening during the shutdown. Spoiler alert -- most court proceedings are going forward.

Pennsylvania is also doing its best to restore as many court operations as possible without having the physical buildings open to the public. While in PA the situation is a bit more county-specific than in NJ, see the link below for a recent news release regarding what should be an increase in access to courts in the coming weeks. http://www.pacourts.us/assets/files/page-1305/file-9159.pdf

As the school year ends, just a reminder from your friendly neighborhood lawyer not to make your kids’ school names visible in their first and last day posts! The internet is a scary place.
Recent changes to the law in NJ (and less recently, also in PA) have made many individuals eligible for expungement that may previously have been disqualified or ineligible. The law now allows for a shorter waiting period and also allows for expungement of multiple offenses if the individual can show that the convictions were "interdependent or closely related in circumstances" and took place within a reasonably short period of time -- basically allowing the argument that a ...person has multiple convictions all stemming from one period of time such as a period of addiction or other personal issues. Previously expungements were limited to one indictable conviction in NJ. Even if you've previously been told you weren't eligible for expungement, the new law changes that for a lot of people. If you're curious about whether you or someone you know can get their NJ record expunged, inbox me.
Children of inmates have a 75% chance of being incarcerated themselves (ourselves) one day. Sesame Street is great for this.
