These poems are all about these past two weeks in Philadelphia. They ask us to consider, what are we fighting for? How do our lives and needs connect and intersect with each other? And how do we rebuild a world of deep love, care, and commitment to each other? If your children are asking heavy questions about what they see on TV and online, I hope these pieces start to answer some of those questions. Woke: A Young Poet’s Call to Justice is written by Mahogany L. Browne, Elizabeth Acevedo, and Olivia Gatwood. Place a hold on freelibrary.org or borrow the ebook on Overdrive!

Today’s poems remind us of the history of resistance led by Black people in this country. They demand for us to remember who came before us and who comes after us: who we’re trying to build a more just, more free world for. As we hear from the authors, as well as organizers in the streets of our beloved city, we must celebrate joy, passion, and community care in order to keep marching forward. This book is recommended for people ages 8 & up. Woke: A Young Poet’s Call to Justice is written by Mahogany L. Browne, Elizabeth Acevedo, & Olivia Gatwood; illustrated by Theodore Taylor III; published by Roaring Brook Press.

Thundering brown, like my power. Today’s picture book is a poem about feeling at home in one’s own beloved skin. It’s a celebration of joy, love, and community for Black and brown children, but the poem and images are so deep and gorgeous I know adults will appreciate it as well. #BlackLivesMatter Written by Samara Cole Doyon, illustrated by Kaylani Juanita, published by Tilbury House. Available on overdrive at freelibrary.org/digitalmedia.
